As school gets underway and we begin a newyear, the topic of conversations on campusesaround the country and the world turns towhat is new and different this school year.Often, the larger differences
a new president,a new curriculum
—aren’t the focus s
o much asthe smaller things
a new course or newtechnologies. Those changes, though relativelyminor in the overall scope of things, can leave
us feeling like we’re struggling to catch up or
worse
—like we’re being left behind. Should we
be teaching in an online environment? Do weneed new course management software? Are
we missing the boat if we’re not using
facebook, or tweeting?
While it’s important that we recognize andrespond to change, it’s just as important that
we hold onto the principles that have alwaysguided our teaching and remember that thetechnology we use will never be as importantas the lessons the students learn. Theapplications will change, but what they learnabout what it means to be a student, a citizen, and a human being will outlast any number of
technological developments. So relax. It’s the
connection with your students and not themeans by which you make it that counts.
As always, we hope you’ll join the conversation
