When was the last time you took a pair of shoes to be resoled? I took a pair of my favorite boots to be resoled and was told that they dont do that anymore. Toss em out and get a new pair! is what I was told. So, Im going to wear them till they got holes in the sole. Seems sad to me that we live in a throwaway culture. With our landfills overflowing and the dwindling of resources plus pollution we are not taking very good care of mother earth. And are you still following your resolution to eat healthier in 2014? I am still trying to quit the candy, ice cream and a chip diet. I am trying to stop doing things that hurt my health. I know that some of my old ways arent good for me. I once heard it said that if you want to dig a new hole, you dont dig the old hole deeper. Sometimes this is exactly what we do when we are trying to change our ways. Rehabilitated smokers may know what I mean, if you stop smoking only to indulge in eating and gain 50 pounds then maybe you need a new plan. It is possible to change destructive behavior. But it isnt easy. Maybe Lent is a time stop those things that get in the way of drawing closer to God. It takes a great deal of energy to dedicate oneself to incorporate devotion to our spiritual growth. One must be intentional and seek ways that assist on the faith filled journey of Lent. One day St. Francis was hoeing his garden and someone asked him, What would you do if you knew that you only had one day to live? He responded, I would keep on hoeing my garden. Could this be a metaphor for our season of Lent? We can have a new spirit, a new way of being, but only if we are willing to keep on growing. We can have a new beginning by relying on one another as a faith community and by not just recycling old behaviors. I commend to you a new beginning with your relationship to God and with all of Gods children. The change we seek just wont happen by wishing but by doing. We can claim that power that comes from a deeper relationship with God, who seeks us to draw closer. Try it, you might grow in your faith journey!

The Wilderness Journey of Lent

Have you ever felt like you were out in the wilderness; lost, surrounded by fear and doubt and anguish? When you find yourself there, you know that sense of challenge. Our season of Lent begins with Jesus in the wilderness. Hes been there ,too. He knows what it is like to have that sense of darkness and despair that sometimes becomes our companion on the way of faith. At the end of Lent we will celebrate but for now we must live thru the times of doubt and fear. Now is a time for reflecting on what life brings, both joy and sorrow. We will live out our faith in the real world. Remember that you are not alone and may you continue to grow in faith.

Light shines in the darkness for the upright., the psalmist sings. Isaiah declares that when we loose the bonds of injustice and share our bread with the hungry, the light breaks forth like the dawn. In another passage from the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus, the light of the world, calls his followers to let the light of their good works shine before others. Go out into the world and spread the light through Gods word.

VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL 2014 The next planning meeting will be Monday, March 17, 2014 at 6:30p.m. in the lounge at the Broad Street United Methodist Church. This is the one of the biggest outreach ministries we do for the children of Norwich and we need your help! There are plenty of ways you can share your gifts and talents! Please call the church office at 334-2895 for more information, to let us know that you will just come to the meeting, or would be interested in helping in someway.

1 can crushed pineapple 2 cups cooked rice 1 bag marshmallows

1 can condensed milk 3/4 cup sugar

Cook rice and cool. Mix in drained pineapple and sugar. Whip milk and fold into rice mixture. Add marshmallows and chill. This can be made the day before, and is better this way.

The Lord Is My Shepherd

A Sunday School teacher decided to have her young class memorize one of the most quoted passages in the BiblePsalm 23. She gave the youngsters a month to learn the chapter. Lille Rick was excited about the task, but he just couldnt remember the Psalm, after much practice, he could barely get past the first line. On the day that the kids were scheduled to recite Psalm 23 in front of the congregation, Ricky was nervous. When it was his turn, he stepped up to the microphone and said proudly , The Lord is my Shepherd, and that is all I need to know. submitted by Pat Lindau

Stations of the Cross Stations of the Cross is a series of fourteen icons depicting incidents in the narrative of Christs passion, from Pilates house to the entombment, which are arranged around the walls of the church. We will use them as a devotional service called The Way of the Cross in which the stations are visited in turn with a pause for a reading, a versicle and response, and a collect. This is especially appropriate for the Fridays in Lent. We invite you to join us for this meaningful time of reflection each Friday in Lent beginning on March 8th at 4:30 p.m. Mr. Gary Brookins will lead us in this time of devotion throughout lent at Emmanuel. All are welcome!

5-week Lenten Study Series

You are invited to a 5-week Lenten Study Series on "Embracing Interfaith Cooperation." Our evening will begin with a DVD presentation and then we will have time to discuss the video and grow in our understanding and respect for other faith traditions. In our time together, we will explore both the challenge and the necessity of Interfaith Cooperation. In an engaging way, the founder of the Interfaith Youth Core, Eboo Patel, tells stories of American founders and great leaders who believed and acted on principle that is possible to embrace differences in religion and maintain a common life. Hopefully, we will be empowered to speak out for pluralism and promote more cooperation and understanding.

Habitat for Humanity Annual Souper Bowl

Souper Bowl fundraiser for Chenango County Habitat for Humanity is scheduled for Saturday, March 15, 2014 at the Norwich, YMCA from 4pm until 6pm. Soups donated by various Chenango County restaurants will be available for sampling. In addition, there will be entertainment, baked goods, a Chinese auction, a 50/50 raffle, and door prizes. Tickets are $5.00 if you get them early, $6.00 at the door. Bring a can of soup to donate to local food pantries. Dont miss out on a : Souper evening while you support Habitat for Humanity. Advance tickets locally: Norwich YMCA & NBT Bank Oxford.

Emmanuel Outreach Program

The Emmanuel Mission Outreach encompasses two formal grant programs plus other supported events for the District. As of January 6, 2014, the Mission Outreach Grant program and Heating Assistance Program have been updated with a combined computer tracking database, and new combined application form. A separate phone line (607)334-8803 set up with its own answering service, allows people to call in for assistance anytime, and messages can be monitored when no one is in the office. The usual office hours for the outreach desk are 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM Monday through Friday. In the current heating season, since Sept. 2013, 70 families have applied and of those, 63 were approved. So far this has cost $17,448.18 for fuels. With the government shut down that delayed HEAP applications for 2 weeks, plus the intense cold temperatures, many families were hard pressed early in the heating season, or have used up all their allotments including Emergency HEAP funds before the end of February. In the Mission Outreach Grant program, assisting families with other utility needs, medical supplies and prescriptions, so far in January and February of 2014, 30 families have applied and 22 approved for grants totaling $2032.25. The Emmanuel Soul Kitchen is also being supported by Mission Outreach for the community. Often when the recipients of Mission Outreach from Emmanuel Episcopal Church get confirmation of our assistance, they say it is an answer to a prayer.
