The Mowing, Watering, Fertilizing of Fall Organic Lawn Care
Now that the heat of the long summer is just about gone, we need to start thinking aboutof the mowing, fertilizing, and watering of our fall organic lawn care. Now we can breathe some cooler air since autumn has arrived. Pretty soon Halloween, Thanksgiving, andChristmas will be upon us and we want to make sure our fall organic lawn care has beencompleted. In regard to mowing, we want to set our lawn mower to the highest possible position andhopefully that is 3 to 4 inches. Our grass and the weeds are going to play a game ofcompetition with each other. We prefer making it easy for our grass and not the weeds; inother words we need the grass to choke the weeds out. The competition is fighting forthe sun; we want the grass to be tall enough to shade the weeds so they will die out.Actually the sun is food for life and strength, and the shade is for disease and death. Thetaller the grass the better chance it has to win over the weeds. That old saying "If I mow short, it will be longer until I have to mow again", is just a myth. The grass needs its blades in order to convert the sun into sugar to nourish the roots. Ifthe blades are cut very short the grass has to work too hard to produce sugar and then itwill grow too fast. By growing so fast it uses up all the stored sugars it has and willweaken the plant and cause more disease and attract more pests. The taller grass is a great deal healthier and will use the extra sugar to grow more grass. You may want to think about mowing more often if you have a serious weed problem inyour lawn. The tender growing area for grass is very close to the soil level but the areafor the weeds is at the top of the plant. By mowing more often you will be cutting off theheads of the weeds and only giving a trim to the grass.Always try to leave the clippings on the lawn this adds nutrients and organic matter backinto the soil. Mowing higher has a few advantages: more shade for the soil means less watering; deeper grass roots will eventually mean less watering; thicker grass yieldsfewer weeds; and slow growing grass suggests less mowing.By watering less frequently makes the grass roots reach deeper into the soil, muchdeeper than the weeds roots. When the top inch or two of the soil becomes dry, theweeds and their seedlings will die, but the grass continues to enjoy the deep moisture.
