I
NTRODUCTION
The church needs leaders. Godly people who will own the great commission and lead thecharge to bring transformation to local communities. Though it is always a danger to overplaythe emphasis of any one gift, it is also true that without courageous and Spirit-filled leadershipthe church will descend into a missiological mess, hopelessly dogged by the inertia of outmodedecclesiology and self-interests. It takes dedicated leaders to channel the gifting and passions of individuals for service in the Kingdom.Few would disagree with the preceding assertion. Yet, there is a debate raging in thechurch today over the role of women in modern 21
st
century ministry. The debate is over whether certain leadership roles in the church are off limits to women because of a God ordainedhierarchy in nature. Some would of course affirm this hierarchical view and attempt tosubstantiate it with a rigorous and sincere appeal to the scriptures. Yet, does the Bible intend totether the leadership and service of women to male “headship?” Does Paul intend to restrict therole of leadership and teaching in the church to only men? And if Paul does do this, is it acultural accommodation or a universal principle to be observed by all believers in all cultures for all ages?

This study will seek to demonstrate that women should be allowed to engage in churchministry and to exercise their spiritual giftedness in whatever ways are appropriate for thereceiving culture.

In order to argue this case, it will first be necessary to survey the major viewson the subject of women in church ministry, offer a brief but serviceable hermeneuticalapproach, followed by an examination of the primary New Testament (hereafter NT) texts that
