Directors Journal

Why is the director valued greatly within a production? The role of a director is to take charge of the group, being the group leader; they must have good organisation skills. The director has the biggest role all throughout the production including pre and post production. These skills must be complimented in the final production which holds a lot of pressure. The director is left with the most responsibility throughout the whole production in order for it to be a success. The productions goal must be generated from the directors mind, into the physical motion picture. The director has the power to determine the productions outcome who must direct and order the production team about. What did the role involve? Organising the production company Generating ideas and visions for the production Making critical decisions to whom is part of the production e.g. actors/editing Organising booking with locations, actors etc. Communicating clearly and confidently with the production team Choosing locations and characters appropriate for the production. Working with the editor to make sure their vision is clear and successful in the final result Generating the narrative and transferring it into a physical form e.g. script Were there any problems encountered in the process of this role? Whilst being the director of this production, I did encounter a few problems along the journey. There were a few problems with communication with the editor as our time schedules were very diverse compared to each other. This may have been because I had not had previous experience in this specific sector which

meant I had to learn from my mistake on the way. The communication problem was not all my fault as the editors forms of contact were very limited without a mobile phone. Also a problem was noticed with the actors as they were not as familiar with the script which was my fault as they did not receive it on time. This is definitely a learning curb as the director as it is a key skill that must be employed. Why this role? The reason why I had chosen to be the director of this production is because I felt that I had the relevant skills required to be the director. This is because I generally enjoy being the leader and telling people what to do, also creating a vision and bringing it to life was a good experience. My level of imagination I feel is very creative and clear which would allow me to communicate with my production team and transfer my ideas to them. I knew that this was going to be a challenge, but I also like to test myself and try and discover and explore what I am capable of. Also being the camera person, it allowed me to shoot my own vision, my own shots to express my imagination the way I feel is the best for the production. This was also a challenge in itself to handle both roles as there as only two individuals within our production group, this definitely put my organisation and handling skills to the test. What has this role taught me? These skills in the long run have taught be that I must be more organised with my time keeping and communication with anyone involved in the production as a director. This was also a very creating role which I enjoyed but also involved a lot of stressful situations handling the whole production which certainly did put my skills to the test. This role has taught be to always stay in line with what needs to be done on time and on top of what needs to be done if possible.
