Web Analytics
History
Web analytics can be as complex or as simple as the user wants it to be. The original ideafor web analytics was just a hit counter. A hit counter is a very simple piece of code thatincreases a counter by one each time the page is loaded. This type of tracker can only give a website owner limited information and is truly just an estimate of how many visitors a site hasgotten. The information a counter provides brings up more questions such as, are these 1,000 hitsunique visitors or just the same visitor hitting the refresh button on their browser? Are the hitsactual people or just a web crawler from a search engine? Where are these people accessing thesite from? China or my city? All of these questions and more were asked more and morefrequently by IT guys and webmaster. Eventually even the business people became interested inweb statistics which lead to the birth of modern web analytics software.
Overview
Who care about web analytics? Well most bloggers and small private web ownersprobably do not care too much about how many people access their site or where those peopleare from. The people who do care are the serious bloggers who receive advertisement money andthe businesses that sell products or generate leads on the web (Pedro Sostre 10). These userswho are monetizing their web presence, or power users, do care who is accessing their site, where they are from, where they found the site, how long they stayed, how many pages theyvisited, what web browser they were using, and many more things. If they can get this rich dataon each of their users they can find out where their traffic is coming from and target more
