IBM Flex System ™ Solution for Hyper
-Node) Reference Architecture
This document describes the reference architecture for the IBM Flex
System™ Solution for Microsoft
-Node). The IBM and Microsoft teams worked together on the Architectural Vision and joint engineering effort to create this Reference Architecture. This paper is intended to provide the planning, design considerations, and best practices for implementing Hyper-V technology on IBM products. The architecture described herein has been validated by both IBM and Microsoft® through the Microsoft Hyper-V Fast Track program. The intended audience of this document is IT professionals, technical architects, sales engineers, and consultants to assist in planning, designing and implementing Hyper-V solutions.
Today’s IT managers are looking
for efficient ways to manage and grow their IT infrastructure with confidence. Good IT practices recognize the need for high availability and maximum resource utilization. Rapidly responding to changing business needs with simple, fast deployment and configuration, while maintaining healthy systems and services directly corresponds to the vitality of your business. Natural disasters, malicious attacks, and even simple software upgrade patches can cripple services and applications until administrators resolve the problems and restore any backed up data. The challenge of maintaining uptime only becomes more critical as businesses consolidate physical servers into a virtual server infrastructure to reduce data center costs, maximize utilization and increase workload performance.
Combining virtualization with failover clustering helps eliminate single points of failure so users have near-continuous access to important server-based, business-productivity applications. Virtual machines can be migrated among clustered host servers to support scheduled maintenance, and in the event of physical or logical outages resulting in unplanned failures, virtual machines can be automatically restarted on remaining cluster nodes. As a result, clients experience little-to-no downtime, and businesses enjoy lower maintenance costs and greater continuous uptime. This seamless operation is attractive for organizations trying to create new business and maintain healthy service level agreements. IBM Flex System is a comprehensive infrastructure system combining a choice of servers, enterprise storage, networking, virtualization, and management into a single structure. Microsoft Hyper-V technology continues to gain competitive traction as a key cloud component in many customer virtualization environments. Hyper-V is included as a standard component in both Windows Server 2012 Standard, and Datacenter editions. Windows 2012 Microsoft Hyper-V Virtual Machines (VMs) support up to sixty-four virtual processors and 1TB of memory.
