2 SCHOUWBURGPLEIN Schouwburgplein, designed by Adriaan Geuze, is enclosed by De Doelen, the Rotterdamse Schouwburg theatre and Path cinema. This exceptional variation on the classic city square, on the roof of a car park, is a lively social hotspot surrounded by outdoor cafs. Acclaimed by architecture critics all over the world, the design consists of a lightweight metal construction incorporating wood, rubber and concrete. 3 LIJNBAAN The busy shopping street in the heart of downtown Rotterdam was opened in 1953. It was Europes first car-free shopping promenade. The concept of traffic-free pedestrian boulevards with awnings to keep shoppers dry was adopted all over the world. Shops of all sizes line the street now, including major brands and chain stores like Tommy Hilfiger, Mango and Invito. 4 CITY HALL On 15 July 1915, Queen Wilhelmina laid the first stone for City Hall on Coolsingel. This historic building in neo-Renaissance style, a design by Henri Evers, is symmetric in structure, built around an inner courtyard with the main entrance in the middle. The inner courtyard, in use as a small park, can be accessed via the street that crosses through City Hall. 5 BEURSTRAVERSE The sunken shopping passage, known locally as the shopping gutter, crosses under Coolsingel. The traverse links two important shopping streets, Lijnbaan and Hoogstraat, via the Beursplein underground metro station. The arcades along the tiny shops that line the walls were designed by Jon Jerde, the American guru of fun-shopping.

ROAMING ROTTERDAM
6 BEURS/WTC The 1928 stock exchange was the first building in Rotterdam to be restored to its former glory following the 1940 bombardment. The World Trade Center, a twenty-story office building in the form of a flattened ellipse that was built on top of the exchange hall, was added in 1986. Brasserie Staal, at the foot of the WTC tower, has an outdoor seating area frequented by conference attendees and shoppers alike. 7 THE MEENT The Meent and surroundings are rapidly developing into one of Rotterdams most prominent and dynamic shopping areas. Hip and happening concept stores like SuperTrash and the UGG shop attract an alternative audience, making this a great place for trend-spotting. The area caters to every taste in terms of food and drinks: grand cafs and stylish restaurants, trendy pubs and cosy ice cream parlours. 12 8

tions, lectures, shows and events. Its permanent exhibition, entitled A monument full of stories, reveals its illustrious past.
10 ERASMUS The statue of Desiderius Erasmus from 1622 is the oldest bronze statue in the Netherlands. As one of the most important humanist philosophers, Erasmus is world-famous. He was born in Rotterdam around 1468 and has come to symbolise the city of his birth.

TIP: One of the biggest markets in all of Europe is held on Binnenrotte. The market is currently open on Tuesdays and Saturdays.
11 URBAN ESPRESSOBAR This minimalist little espresso bar with the trendy interior not only makes great coffee, but also serves delicious sandwiches, soup and fresh juice. Ideal for lunch or a nice spot to sit down and relax. 12 CUBE HOUSES Architect Piet Blom was commissioned to build an unusual bridge over the busy arterial road between Blaak and Oude Haven. The famous result is the Cube Houses, also known as the Blaakse Bos forest. Number 70 is a museum house that showcases the interior. The Stayokay hostel in one of the Cube Houses is also worth checking out if youd like to stay overnight for a first-hand experience. 13 OUDE HAVEN Historic ships contrast beautifully with the modern backdrop of the inner harbour of Oude Haven. In warm weather, the sidewalk cafs are packed all evening. Even when the season

8 DUDOK The restaurants name comes from famous Dutch architect Willem Dudok, who designed the imposing office building, now one of the most famous cafs and restaurants in Rotterdam. As many authentic details as possible have been retained in the large, open-plan space. Dudok has an excellent atmosphere for enjoying the Mediterranean cuisine or its famous apple pie. 9 LAURENSKERK Named after St Laurence, the patron saint of the city, this Late Gothic church received its current shape around 1525, but took heavy damage during the bombardment on 14 May 1940. It now stands in striking contrast to the new architecture that has been added to Rotterdam since then. Besides its regular church services, the building now also hosts tours, concerts, exhibi-

is brisk, many locals find their way to Oude Haven to dine, drink and dance. Also includes popular student hangouts.
14 WITTE HUIS 45 metres and eleven stories high, this 1898 office building designed by architect W. Molenbroek was the first skyscraper in Europe. Rather than the steel construction considered modern at the time, the architect used thick load-bearing walls made of brick. The faade is clad in white-glazed brick decorated with mosaics and Art Nouveau images. The building is surrounded by sidewalk cafs.

RED APPLE Playfully referencing NYCs Big Apple, the Red Apple residential tower designed by architect Kees Christiaanse gets its name from the colour and from the apple market that once stood here. The high-profile, bright red lines on the faade of the 124-metre tower narrow towards the top, emphasising the sleek shape of the building.
15

Splash offers a playful way for kids aged 4 to 10 to explore the maritime life.
18 WATERTAXI The ultimate way to travel from A to B and savour the authentic flavour of Rotterdam is the water taxi. These fast boats offer passenger transport seven days a week from various boarding points.

VERWOESTE STAD This bronze artwork made in 1951 by Ossip Zadkine is the citys main war monument. The gaping hole in the body symbolises how Rotterdam was cut to the heart by the German bombardment.
16

TIP: An adventurous alternative for part of this walking route: Take the water taxi to Hotel New York and continue the route from there.
19 ERASMUS BRIDGE The Erasmus Bridge, designed by architect Ben van Berkel in 1996, is the definitive icon of Rotterdam. The 800-metre bridge spans the Maas River and links the north and south of Rotterdam. The suspension bridge has a 139-metre-high steel pylon which is secured with 40 cables. The shape of the pylon gave the bridge its nickname, The Swan.

DE ROTTERDAM Designed by renowned architect Rem Koolhaas, De Rotterdam was completed at the end of 2013. The multifunctional, sustainably designed building consists of three towers in close proximity, soaring nearly 150 metres high; their top half is slightly shifted compared to their bottom half. The three linked towers are a vertical city of high-class flats, a 4-star hotel, offices, shops, restaurants, fitness, parking and cultural functions.

manent exhibition featuring 2,000 masterpieces from its collection, drawn from all over the world, and organises several high-profile theme exhibitions every year. The historic building also houses a store and bookshop, as well as a restaurant with an excellent lunch and dinner menu. VEERHAVEN The Veerhaven inner harbour is frequently referred to as one of the most beautiful spots in Rotterdam. The citys history still shines through clearly here. The harbour is currently home port and stop-off point for historic ships that still sail the seas, as well as more modern sailing ships inspired by nautical history. Its excellent location and facilities makes Veerhaven a popular port of call on major international shipping routes.
26 27 EUROMAST The Euromast, designed in 1960 by H.A. Maaskant for that years Floriade show, is the highest observation tower in the Netherlands. The observation deck at 100 metres offers a fantastic 360-degree panorama of the city. Take it to the next level and board the rotating Euroscoop lift to go all the way up to 185 metres. Daredevils can abseil or rope-slide from the Euromast, but its also a great spot to enjoy a cup of coffee or get lunch or dinner with a great view. 28 WESTELIJK HANDELSTERREIN The stately faades of the Scheepvaartkwartier conceal the Westelijk Handelsterrein, a late 19th-century listed building consisting of 36 warehouses distributed over two levels. When the complex was rebuilt as a public venue, many characteristic elements were preserved. The gorgeous glass roof encloses galleries featuring modern art, as well as restaurants and shops with an intriguing range of options.

Maas, is an attraction in its own right. From 1873 until the mid1970s, thousands of passengers departed for America from here. The former arrival and departure hall of the Holland-America Line is part of our industrial heritage. Many cruise ships dock here these days. The popular sidewalk caf on the waterfront offers a grand vista overlooking the Nieuwe Maas.
22 HOTEL NEW YORK One of the most beautiful historic buildings in the city, Hotel New York stands at the tip of the Wilhelmina Pier. Once the headquarters of the Holland-America Line, it is now a hotel and restaurant that still evokes the delightful grandeur of the past. In addition to the extensive menu, the restaurant also offers a broad range of fresh fish. Dinner can also be served on the terrace by the river - or you can sit in a waterfront beach chair and enjoy the ships sailing past. 23 FLOATING PAVILION The floating pavilion in Rijnhaven inner harbour consists of three interlinked globes, the largest of which is 24 metres in diameter. Using sustainable, flexible building practices, the pavilion is also a pilot for floating urbanisation in Rotterdam.

LUXURIOUS ROTTERDAM
73 THE HARBOUR CLUB ROTTERDAM The Harbour Club is situated in the building that housed the former Parkzicht in Het Park by the Euromast. Inside, the stately 1912 villa has been stripped down and restyled into a robustly modern restaurant. When the weather is fine, the Harbour Clubs two outdoor terraces offer a great place to sit in the sun. Kievitslaan 25 74 STROOM Stroom is a hotel, bar, lounge and restaurant where hotel patrons, locals and other Rotterdam residents drink, eat, chat and congregate. It offers an informal, warm environment that combines sleek design with the robust architecture of the former power plant. A charming spot with a varied menu serving breakfast, lunch, drinks and dinner. Lloydstraat 1 75 NEW LUXOR THEATER Quite possibly the most beautiful entertainment theatre in the Netherlands, presenting long-running productions on a grand scale, from musicals, shows, cabaret, theatre concerts, children & family shows, opera and dance. The theatre can accommodate audiences of up to 1,500 people, with foyers on all sides and a separate access ramp along the outside for lorries carrying stage sets. Posthumalaan 1 76 SS ROTTERDAM The steamship Rotterdam is the former flagship of the Holland-America Line. The citys pride and glory has opened its gangways to the public. With one of the audio tours available from the desk, you can visit the beautifully restored lounges and decks, and even get a peek at the engine rooms. A unique location for hotel accommodations, a great meal... or just a good cup of coffee. 3e Katendrechtsehoofd 25
