Derby Delegation on Status of Parking Garage

DERBY State Rep. Themis Klarides (R-114), State Sen. Joseph J. Crisco, Jr. (D-17) and State Rep. Linda M. Gentile (D-104) are seeking more information on the status of the Derby Municipal Parking Garage that was closed following an inspection that revealed its crumbling condition. We stand ready to advocate in any way possible, and welcome feedback on how best to address the deterioration of the garage, the legislators said. However, the lack of communication from municipal officials is preventing our ability to assist and be informed about the situation. If we had been requested to appear before the Board of Aldermen to specifically discuss this issue, we certainly could have been there. But without notice, it is very unusual for legislators to attend or address local governing bodies. We rely on them to connect with us about status updates so we can determine what, if anything, can be done on the state level. Were always here to help when called upon, but at this point we havent received any calls, and cant step on toes when it comes to determining the fate of city-owned property. The downtown parking garage is essential for area residents, commuters and courthouse visitors who are understandably eager for a timely resolution that will expedite its reopening. In fact, jurors are currently being bussed to Milford because courthouse parking is now unavailable. We agree that safety is paramount and we hope to see a remedy that will balance the need for available parking with reasonable expectations for safeness. The four-floor garage, which holds 300 vehicles daily, was recently closed following a 5-4 vote by the Board of Aldermen that left commuters without an alternative parking option. The Derby Parking Authority will now work to develop a plan for the repairs and report back to the aldermen for their final decision on how to address the 64 trouble spots identified by structural engineers. ### Contacts:
