Access to enery across the world is a major concern:
* 1.6 billion people live without electricity
* 3 billion people still use traditional biomass for cooking, accelerating deforestation
* 1.6 million people die every year due to respiratory problems associated with toxic smoke from cooking fires
In order to address these challenges, Ashoka and Hystra commenced a joint research project focused on surfacing the best energy business models operating in low income markets.
The report analyzes projects serving the poorest, and that are economically viable and scalable. The trends highlighted in this report show a convergence of the private and the citizen sectors - a new way of working that can transform access to energy, and provide social impact and financial returns.
