Hymn of Praise
ISE OLUWA
(That Which The Creator Made Can Never Be Destroyed)

Unison Scripture
MARK 12:28-34 (NRSV)
One of the scribes came near and heard them disputing with one another, and seeing that he answered them well, he asked him, Which commandment is the first of all? 29Jesus answered, The first is, Hear, O Israel: the Lord our God, the Lord is one; 30you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength. 31The second is this, You shall love your neighbor as yourself. There is no other commandment greater than these.

Love !

Then the scribe said to him, You are right, Teacher; you have truly said that he is one, and besides him there is no other; 33and to love him with all the heart, and with all the understanding, and with all the strength, and to love ones neighbor as oneself, this is much more important than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices. 34When Jesus saw that he answered wisely, he said to him, You are not far from the kingdom of God. After that no one dared to ask him any question.

Lenten Meditation
GETTING TO THE HEART OF THINGS A DIVINELY INSPIRED DISCONTENT
If our life at times seems rather superficial or shallow, is this prompted by the devils work or by God? It often seems devilish. The goodness and worth of life may look rather empty. Evil seems to predominate. At such times, life is like a gigantic jigsaw puzzle, all scattered about in meaningless pieces. We know, though, that it is supposed to be a beautiful picture.
SERMON NOTES/PRAYER CONCERNS

God is always working to make things whole. The One, who brought order out of chaos in creation, wants to continue this work in each of us. A feeling of emptiness and dissatisfaction may be Gods prompting us to consider what would make things different. Restlessness should lead us not to escape but to more involvement in what is of greatest importance. What are some areas of change we might want to consider? First up, relationships! At times, when we feel down, it is so helpful to have a friend we can turn to. Even better is to have a network of support. Such a network, though, requires diligence on our part. Gods call to love one another takes work, because love involves giving as well as receiving. Can life be richer, through nurturing our friendships? Next up, time! Do we really use our time or does our time use us? Who is in charge? To be sure, some things in life simply must be done, whether we like it or not. Earning a living demands many hours. Homemaking and parenthood include some drudgery. Most of us, though, could make better use of our time with more thought and intentionality. Next up, the inner life! We need to take time to assess where we are and where we are going. Look not only at your worries, but at your inner resources. Most of us are capable of living more productive, more satisfying lives. Discontent can move us away from God or toward God. Lent calls us to make an upward choice.

Fasting
Fasting for the Lenten Season
This year, our church-wide theme Loving God. Living Green. Liberating All. calls us to a closer relationship with God, and to the stewardship of Gods creation, as a path to liberation. During this Lenten season, we are called to a church-wide fast. Fasting is a spiritual discipline designed to deepen our relationship with Jesus Christ. We do not fast to lose weight; we fast to be empowered by Jesus Christ. In 2014, God will reveal Gods purpose and plan in your life if you dare fast, pray, study and learn the power of quiet time. Jesus had to steal away from the crowd and spend time with his Father in the mountains, to pray, study, reflect, meditate and center his spirit. If fasting and prayer were the disciplines of Jesus, should not this be followed by us? Join with us this season and witness a breakthrough as we fast, pray, study, reflect, meditate and learn the power of quiet time. Question: I have never fasted before? Answer: Consult your doctor first!* Fasting is not the removal of all food from your diet. Fasting is learning to discipline your mind, body and spirit to remove something you know hinders your ability to function at your highest capacity, from your life or diet. Question: Is fasting biblical? Answer: Fasting is biblical. Throughout the Old and New Testaments, fasting was used by the people of God to prepare for a spiritual challenge, hear Gods voice before making a major decision, and for removing destructive forces in your life. Fast #1 - Fasting to confront destructive forces March 5 March 11 Eat all your meals before 6:00 p.m. March 12 March 18 Eat only two meals before 6:00 p.m. March 19 March 25 - Eat only one meal a day before 6:00 p.m. March 26 April 1 Drink only juices, water and/or tea April 2 April 8 Eat only fruits and vegetables before 6:00 p.m. April 9 April 20 Slowly begin to add meat to your diet Fast #2 The Daniel Fast (Taken from the book of Daniel). When Daniel was captured by the Babylonians, he asked of the Babylonians if he, along with Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, could fast eating only fruits and vegetables so they would be prepared to confront the Babylonian king. March 5 March 11 Eat all meals before 6:00 p.m. March 12 March 18 Eat only two meals a day before 6:00 p.m. March 19 March 25 Eat only fruits and vegetables before 6:00 p.m. March 26 April 1 Eat one meal a day before 6:00 p.m., meat may be added. April 2 April 8 Eat two meals a day before 6:00 p.m., meat may be added April 9 April 20 Eat three meals a day before 6:00 p.m. Fast #3 - Removing certain foods or items from your diet or life. One type of fasting is to remove certain foods from your diet, such as fried foods, sweets, sodas or refined sugar and/or flour. *Please seek the advice of your primary care provider/doctor before beginning a fast that involves restricting food/calories and/or medication. Your doctor can help you design a fasting plan that protects your health and wellbeing. This is extremely important if you are pregnant or have a medical condition. Medical condition examples include, but are not limited to those who have a chronic disease such as diabetes, HIV/AIDS, hypertension, heart disease, cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, recent surgery, etc.

Raise The Roof

Then I said to them, You see the trouble we are in: Jerusalem lies in ruins, and its gates have been burned with fire. Come, let us rebuild the wall of Jerusalem, and we will no longer be in disgrace. . . . They replied, Let us start rebuilding. So they began this good work. Nehemiah 2:17-18 NIV

Praise God!
This week we surpassed an important milestone as we moved past the thousand pledge mark, and as of March 6th, 1,003 members/families have made pledges to our Raise the Roof campaign. Those pledges now total $4,048,429 . . . Drawing us ever closer to our goal of $5 million. At this time, just about half of our members that Opted-In to the Raise the Roof Campaign have actually pledged to the campaign. Of those 1,000 or so remaining, if those pledges average just $250 a year, we would exceed our goal. If you have yet to pledge, please prayerfully consider doing so during this season of Lent. As we celebrate our risen Savior this Easter, what a wonderful blessing to have achieved our pledge goal, and be on our way to fulfilling the vision for our new "Green" roof, as well as other critical infrastructure improvements to our church home.

Fred Onovwerosuoke, an award-winning composer with a diverse background, has given rise to a varied composition style. Born in Ghana to Nigerian parents, Dr. Onovwerosuoke grew up in both countries and eventually naturalized in the United States. FredO, as friends call him, has spent time in over thirty African countries doing field work and analyzing some of Africas abundant music traditions. FredO has also traveled extensively in the American Deep South, the Caribbean and South America for comparative research in what he likes to call traceable musical Africanisms. His influences are wide and varied, and is much at home discussing Handel and Mozart as he is talking about the gonje, mbira, kora, kontingu and balafon riffs, or foremost exponents of African traditional music. In 1994 he founded the St. Louis African Chorus to help nurture African choral music as a mainstream repertoire for performance and education. Today, the organizations mission has broadened to include other art music by composers of African-descent and renamed African Musical Arts Inc.
FredO holds a PhD in Interdisciplinary Arts and Science, and several honorary accolades, and serves as Editor of the Voice of African Music newsletter. Onovwerosuokes works have been featured in audio recordings, films, documentaries, and radio, including Robert De Niros film, The Good Shepherd, William-Chapman Nyahos CD, ASA and Hymes/Hollisters CD African Art Music for Flute, and the Hudson/Henderson CD, Libera. His book, Songs of Africa: 22 Pieces for Mixed Choirs, quickly became a favorite among choral directors across the globe, Onovwerosuokes Twentyfour Studies in African Rhythms (AM Publishers), in two volumes, is one of the most-demanded African-rhythm influenced piano studies known. His Twelve African Songs for Solo Voice & Piano also sets a similar pace, globally.

2014 Trinity UCC Theme Loving God, Living Green, Liberating All
July Job 38:4-7 (NIV)
Where were you when I laid the earths foundations? Tell me if you understand. Who marked off its dimensions? Surely you know! Who stretched a measuring line across it? On what were its footings set or who laid its cornerstone while the morning stars sang together for joy!

LOVING GOD
January Deuteronomy 6:5 (NIV)
Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.

August Deuteronomy 24:19 (NIV)

February Psalm 119:105-106 (NIV)

Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path. I have taken an oath and confirmed it, that I will follow your righteous laws.

When you are harvesting in your field and you overlook a sheaf, do not go back to get it. Leave it for the foreigner, the fatherless and the widow, so that the Lord your God may bless you in all the work of your hands.

March John 15:10 (NIV)

If you keep my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Fathers commands and remain in his love.

LIBERATING ALL
September Galatians 5:1 (NIV)
It is for freedom that Christ set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.

April Romans 14:19 (NIV)

Let us therefore make every effort to do what leads to peace and to mutual edification.

October Galatians 5:13 (NIV)

LIVING GREEN
May Psalm 24:1 (NIV)
The earth is the Lords and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it.

You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in Love.

November Galatians 3:28 (NIV)

June Genesis 1:29-30 (NIV)

There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.

Then God said, I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food. And to all the beasts of the earth and all the birds in the sky and all the creatures that move along the groundeverything that has the breath of life in itI give every green plant for food. And it was so.

December Luke 4:18-19 (NIV)

The spirit of the Lord is on me, because he anointed me to preach good news to the poor, he has sent me to proclaim freedom for the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set the oppressed free, to proclaim the favorable year of the Lord.
