Never discuss religion or politics, as the saying goes, if you want to keep the peace. But it's clear that old adage hasn't really been too effective. Prejudice, discrimination, intolerance, and wars all in the name of God have been an integral part of the human condition for at least as long as that condition has been recorded. But the price on these addictions is getting pretty steep. It could be the time has come when we will have to give them up. I don't expect we'll all quit cold turkey; but maybe some honest, open, sit-down heart-to-hearts might help to see us through. Maybe not, but if you think there's half a chance, then I say, "Let's start the conversation."

A very interesting little book on a very controversial subject. Is there a supreme intelligence and how did we humans get here on this planet? Ungerecht begins by covering the laws of matter, energy and thermodynamics giving many examples and explanations of why they behave the way they do. He then moves on to consciousness where he explains what he knows it to be and not to be. In the next chapter you get a sense of his theory of creation and in the following chapter he analyzes those theories. In chapter eleven he turns to a discussion of the use of God in the public school system including what has been going on in our society in recent years in regards to this subject. Ungerecht shares his ideas on how he thinks our government can implement a program into our schools where our children would be presented with different views and beliefs in regards to God and spirituality. He explains in some detail how this would then help our children decide for themselves what to believe in based on the evidence presented by professional scholars. I found this book quite interesting and agreed with many of Ungerecht's ideas and his conclusions on how we came to be here on this earth and the presence of a higher being. What I did find hard to picture, however, is a school program like he explains being implemented in our public school system. The main reason is that our government does not place education on it's highest priority list. Instead, in recent years funds for education have only received cut-backs and I foresee more to come. However, I can see his point in the reason why what our children are taught in school in regards to evolution needs serious updating. This book has a lot of information for it's size and I learned a few things in the process. Ungerecht's makes a good point in his book when he says that the proof scientists search for when it comes to acknowledgement of our origins of creation and our existence cannot be proven due to its complexity and our lack of our ability to understand.
