COUNCIL MEMBER, 33rd DISTRICT, BROOKLYN

March 10, 2014 Commissioner Polly Trottenberg Department of Transportation 55 Water Street, 9th Floor New York, NY 10041

Dear Commissioner Trottenberg, I am writing in regards to a motorcycle accident that occurred in the Greenpoint neighborhood of Brooklyn, not a block away from where I live. Yesterday, Jorge Rios, a 47-year old and resident of Queens, was killed in a crash while riding his motorcycle at Manhattan Avenue and Green Street. Unfortunately, this is not the first time this type of tragedy has occurred on this stretch of Manhattan Avenue. Last summer, Jakub Kizer, an 18-year old resident of Greenpoint, lost his life in a crash on Manhattan Avenue while riding his motorcycle, this time where Manhattan meets Eagle Street. I have major concerns about visibility and safety on Manhattan Avenue and believe that the implementation of engineering improvements, be it more traffic signals, daylighting of intersections, or other such solutions would make this highly-trafficked street safer for everyone who uses it. Therefore, I am requesting that the Department of Transportation conduct a full review of all Manhattan Avenue intersections in Greenpoint and explore ways to increase visibility and safety. I strongly believe that engineering improvements on Manhattan Avenue will make our community safer for pedestrians, bicyclists, and motorists alike and I thank you for your consideration. Sincerely,

Stephen T. Levin Council Member, 33rd District
