That's not a real ad. It was a parody run in National Lampoon magazine. VW used to have it stopped.
Doubt it. Back then there weren't the modern-style lobbyist relationships that would preclude this stuff today. One can imagine an ad with a can of Bush's Baked Beans on one side and a portrait of the US President on the other, under the beans there's the caption "Good Bush" and under the portrait there's the caption "Bad Bush." It just wouldn't happen. Tho it'd rock. :-)
