GUS O’DONNELL’S PERMANENT SECRETARIES MEETING ON 5 MARCH TO DISCUSS LOGISTICAL ARRANGEMENTS FOR FOREIGN DIGNITARIES ATTENDING THE LONDON SUMMIT ON 4-2 APRIL HOME OFFICE ISSUES 4, Public Order + Metropolitan Police hugely experienced at policing public order events Confident that their operational planning, under Commander Broadhurst, will manage public order threats and risks. * Stand ready to support Metropolitan Police in helping their planning (as appropriate) and we will ensure that Ministers are appropriately sighted on policing plans Background Commander Broadhurst is Gold Commander for G20 and is currently putting together the Met strategy. All events on 1 and 2 April fall within the jurisdiction of the Metropolitan Police, who will be supported by British Transport Police, City of London Police and regional forces serving Stansted and Luton airports (for arrivals and departures) The policing operation starts on 27 March and builds to 2 April when over 2000 police officers will be delegated around the Summit venue. Plans are underway to police the following events: + ATUC March in Central London on 28 March with several thousand anticipated + April Fuels Day (Climate Change Protest) + A Stop the War march in Central London on 1 April with an estimated 3 to 5,000 participating + More extreme protest groups are expected to mobilise on this day to disrupt London + Marches to Excel on the day of the event by protest groups including Free Tibet. 1, Public Order Key line + Metropolitan Police hugely experienced at policing public order events.
