WASHINGTON, DC \u2013 Four United Nations World Program (WFP) employees were
killed after a suicide bombing at the offices in Islamabad, Pakistan. The attacks took
place in the early afternoon on Monday, October 5, 2009. Many people have been
seriously injured, and some of them are in critical condition.
We express our sincere condolences to the WFP Pakistan office and to the family and friends of those who were injured or killed. The victims of these attacks were dedicated to WFP\u2019s mission, and we truly appreciate the contributions they have made to fighting hunger in Pakistan.
This tragic event is a reminder that WFP implements its food assistance and
development programs in some of the world\u2019s most dangerous places, often at risk
to its own staff. Millions of people worldwide rely on WFP\u2019s critical work for
WFP is providing food assistance to as many as 10 million people in Pakistan,
including 2 million people who have been uprooted by conflict. In addition to its
emergency operations, WFP also implements school meals, mother\u2010and\u2010child health
and nutrition and food for work programs.
