Actually, the pattern should be worked as written. The first ch 3 counts as the first dc. It's because technically you are using the last dc in the mesh block to form a solid square. It's what allows the first and last block in the row to be the same width as the rest of the solid blocks in the row.
Very nice pattern! I love the simplicity and texture but there is an error in the first row of the instructions. I believe it should read dc in 3rd ch from hook, dc in next 8 dc ...then continue on with the pattern as written. Maybe I misunderstood but I had to rip out my first row and start it over. Just want to help the next person. =)
