Instructions

1 Place the flame tree seed in a small bowl. Pour

boiling water over the seed and allow it to soak for 24 hours.

2 Fill the planting pot with moist, not soggy,

sphagnum peat moss. Insert the seed 1/2 inch into the peat and cover it with more peat.

3 Place the pot in a bright, warm (at least 70

degrees Fahrenheit) location and allow it to sit until the seed sprouts. Germination generally occurs within six weeks. Keep the peat moss moist at all times during germination. Your flame tree will be ready to plant in the garden when it has four sets of leaves.

4 Find a spot in the garden that gets all day sun and
receives some shelter from high winds.

5 Dig up the planting area to a depth of 12 inches

and crush any large clods of dirt.

6 Add a 4-inch layer of coarse sand and a 2-inch

layer of compost to the soil and mix it in well.

7 Dig a hole with the same depth and width as the

pot in which the seedling has been growing. Carefully remove the seedling from the pot and place the roots in the hole. Backfill with soil and pack it well to remove air pockets.

8 Water the Brachychiton acerifolius well and keep the soil

moist until the tree is established. You will know this has occurred when there is new growth. Once it is established, you can water less frequently, once a week. In fact, the flame tree can withstand some drought conditions and may suffer from too much water.
