How to Write an Essay About a Novel
Writing an essay on a novel can be quite a challenging job for students. In order to  write an essay on a novel, you need to read the novel and then analyze it to get an understanding of its content. The analysis of the novel must be divided into parts in order to get it right. There are four important action points that constitute the process of analyzing a novel.
 Ask Relevant Questions
It is important for the reader to ask a number of questions while reading the novel and also after he or she has finished reading. These questions should be based on  various aspects of the novel such as theme, characterization and use of symbols in the story. Some of the relevant questions that the reader should ask are:

What is the importance of each of the characters in the story?

What are their qualities and shortcomings?

 What does each character desire?

What is the plot of the novel about?

Is the novel trying to highlight any social issues?

What message does the author want to communicate through the novel?

Does the novel reflect anything about the author’s personal life?

What do the symbols used in the novel, if any, represent? Figuring out the answers to these questions can provide you with the perfect topic to  write your essay.

An essay is in no way a summary of events that occur in the novel. You need to first determine the main idea or argument that the novel is based on. It is not necessary
that you need to be in line with the author’s argument; you can create your own
argument of what the novel is trying to convey. You must also keep in mind that the argument you are putting forward should not be too general. Try to come up with an argument that is more specific in nature.
Find and quote textual evidence in your essay
While writing an essay on a novel, it is essential that the ideas that you are portraying in your essay are supported by examples from events that occur in the novel. This is called textual evidence. Textual evidence includes paraphrases and often direct quotations from the novel. It is important to note that the idea you put forward along  with the textual evidence should be followed by an explanation of the point you are trying to make.
Give your personal interpretation of the Novel
Your personal interpretation of the ideas presented in the novel by the author is also of great importance in writing an essay on the novel. The analysis and explanation that you offer in the essay gives the reader an idea that you have read and understood the novel properly. But your personal interpretation of the novel, that is determined through how you have related the ideas of the novel to the real world, tells the reader that you have a complete understanding of the central idea of the novel.
