The Native Womens Association of Canada is looking for a National Coordinator to oversee and manage activities related to the National Aboriginal Womens Summit IV (NAWS IV). The NAWS IV will be held in Membertou, Nova Scotia, on October 20-22, 2014. The NAWS IV will provide a forum for governments (Aboriginal, provincial/territorial and federal) and community-based representatives to share expertise and knowledge; showcase innovative and promising practices; and, identify opportunities for working collaboratively on a range of issues affecting Aboriginal women, their families and communities. Previous summits (NAWS I & NAWS II) have drawn upwards of 200-250 delegates including, elders, spiritual leaders and community representatives. NAWS IV Objectives: Provide a forum for sharing best practices and knowledge exchange; Raise awareness on the range of issues affecting Aboriginal women, in all their diversity; Develop culturally-relevant and accessible responses to issues affecting Aboriginal women, their families and communities; and, Increase the level of engagement and collaboration amongst governments and Aboriginal organizations.

The successful candidate will work under the direction of a National Steering Committee (NSC) comprised of members from the five National Aboriginal Organizations and the Nova Scotia Provincial Planning Committee (PPC) designate.

Job Description: The National Event Coordinator will work with NWACs Executive Director and the NSC to oversee and manage all aspects of the Summit. Responsibilities include:

1- Organize meetings of the National Steering Committee, including: Arranging logistics, documentation, and attending all NSC meetings; Providing administrative support; Managing communications and minutes in advance of, during, and post NSC meetings.

2- With guidance and direction from the National Steering Committee, plan and execute all logistical and administrative aspects for the Summit including: Prepare a detailed project time-line; Maintain detailed financial/expense records and submit monthly to the Provincial Planning Committee Co-Chairs; Maintain ongoing communication with the Provincial Planning Committee Co-Chairs; In accordance with direction from the National Steering Committee, formally invite keynote speakers, conference presenters, panel members, etc.; Negotiate contracts for services, approve suppliers invoices, and maintain financial/billing records; Coordinate Summit requirements such as: translation, signage, special need requirements, audio-visual needs, printing, and displays; Promote the Summit with trade and professional associations/groups; Event design coordinating general logistics for arrival, departure, accommodations (i.e., group rates), culturally appropriate arrangements for meals, breakdown of events and forums for each day of the Summit including opening and closing ceremonies; Plan entertainment and social gatherings for participants; Work with the Provincial Planning Committee to secure accommodations and oversee logistical considerations; Work with the Provincial Planning Committee on printed materials and promotional materials for participants; Summit wrap-up: Provide all written materials, invoices, financial records to Provincial Planning Committee Co-Chairs; Other tasks as deemed necessary.

Education requirements: Bachelors degree or college diploma in womens studies, administration, events/conference planner or related field from a recognized Canadian postsecondary institution and recent event planning experience.

Additional requirements: The National Event Coordinator is expected to work effectively with a diverse range of individuals and groups. The ideal candidate should have proven experience with national event/conference planning. The candidate should have experience working with diverse Aboriginal groups. Knowledge of and experience working directly with Aboriginal womens organizations would be an asset. Effective communication skills and troubleshooting ability, organizational skills, enthusiasm, self-motivation, adaptability, and the ability to delegate and complete assigned tasks, diplomacy and a strong sense of responsibility are essential.
