*********************************************************The United States Medical Licensing Examination, or USMLE,
is a three-step examination for medical licensure in theUnited States and is sponsored by the Federation of StateMedical Boards (FSMB) and the National Board of MedicalExaminers (NBME). Students and graduates of US or Canadian
medical school programs leading to the MD degree that areaccredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME)or leading to the DO degree that are accredited by the AmericanOsteopathic Association (AOA) register for Step 1 and Step 2with the NBME. Students and graduates of medical schoolsoutside the United States and Canada register for Step 1 andStep 2 with the Educational Commission for Foreign MedicalGraduates (ECFMG). Graduates of medical schools in and outside
the United States and Canada register for Step 3 with the FSMBor a medical licensing authority in the United States.These materials are intended to help orient individuals registeredto take Step 1, Step 2 Clinical Knowledge (CK) and ClinicalSkills (CS), and Step 3 of the USMLE. Color display set to 24-Bit or True ColorSee below for additional information about downloading,installing, and/or using the software and for informationon screen resolutions needed for different software versions.*********************************************************CBT Software Versions*********************************************************At present, the CBT software used to deliver Step 1, 2 CK,and 3 is provided by Prometric, a division of ThomsonLearning, Inc. The NBME is developing new software fordelivery of the USMLE Steps as well as tests for otherprograms. The NBME software, known as FRED, will replace
the Prometric software in USMLE during 2004 and 2005.
 
The software you install has over 100 practice test items foreach Step examination. There are five sample case simulationsfor Step 3. The FRED software has the same practice test itemsas the Prometric software for each Step. See below and theUSMLE website to decide which software to use in running thesample items for the Step you are taking. Monitor the homepage at the USMLE website (http://www.usmle.org) to check forinformation regarding changes in test delivery software.Note to Step 3 examinees:The NBME software (FRED), will replace the Prometricsoftware in USMLE Step 3 in the fall of 2004. Installationof FRED for USMLE Step 3 will be phased in over severalweeks in October 2004. If you schedule to take the Step 3with a test date during the month of October, you shouldfamiliarize yourself with both the Prometric test deliverysoftware and FRED.All Step 3 applicants must review the Primum CCS tutorialand practice with all the practice cases well in advanceof the testing day to have a thorough understanding of howPrimum CCS works.Note to Step 2 CK examinees:Migration of Step 2 USMLE to the FRED software will occurafter the Step 3 transition in October 2004. Please monitorthe USMLE website to check for changes in test deliverysoftware.Note to Step 1 examinees:Migration of Step 1 USMLE to the FRED software will occursometime in 2005. Please monitor the USMLE website to checkfor changes in test delivery software.*********************************************************Obtaining Orientation Materials*********************************************************The 2005 USMLE Orientation materials are provided to allregistered examinees on a CD. They are also available fordownload from the USMLE website (http://www.usmle.org).Instructions are included below to assist in downloadingfrom the web, installing the files that have been downloaded,installing from the CD, running the practice software, watchingthe video and reading the documentation in portable documentformat (pdf).*********************************************************Instructions to Start the CD*********************************************************Insert the CD into your CD drive. If your computer has the CDautorun feature enabled, the CD will start automatically. Ifthe autorun feature is not enabled, open the Windows Startmenu and select Run. Type X:\menu.htm (substitute the letter ofyour computers CD drive for X). Click OK. A menu will appear

* Dialog boxes will appear on your screen to guide youthrough the rest of the installation.When installation is complete you should see a folderon your desk top with icon(s) for the practice materialsyou selected. If the desktop folder does not appear, pressF5 to refresh your screen.*********************************************************Instructions to Download from the USMLE website*********************************************************All downloadable files are zipped.* Click the link for the portion that you want to download.* Make a note of the name of the file.* Depending on the configuration of your computer, you maysee a dialog box asking whether you want to Open or Save

* Save this file to your desktop (or make a note of thepath where you save the file).*********************************************************Installing Downloaded Files*********************************************************Files downloaded from the web are zipped. If you donot have a utility to unzip a file, you can obtain anevaluation copy from http://www.winzip.com/downwzeval.htm.* Double click on the file on your desktop (or navigateto the location where you saved the downloaded file anddouble click).* Unzip the file to your desktop (or make a note of thelocation where the file is saved).* Make a note of the file name it will end in .exe.
* Double click on the unzipped file on your desktop (theone that ends with .exe).
* If you receive a security warning authenticode signature
not found, click 'Yes' to continue the installation.
