AccordingtoareportpublishedthisweekbyMediaMattersforAmerica,WorldNewswithDiane Sawyer,CBSEveningNews,NightlyNewswithBrianWilliams,andPBSNewsHouronlymentionedthe publiccostoflowminimumwageseighttimesinthelastyearincludinghowtheyburdentaxpayersand forceworkerstorelyongovernmentprograms,suchasSNAP,TANF,housingvouchers,orother antipovertyprograms.ThemajorityofmentionswereonPBSNewsHour,whichprovidedsixoftheeight totalmentions.TheothertwoweremadeonNightlyNewswithBrianWilliams. Whenitcomestogrowingoureconomyandimprovingthelivelihoodsofworkers,itsincreasingly imperativethatyoureveningnewsprogramscoverthecostofinaction.Becauseoflowwages,many workersinthefastfoodindustryalonemanyofwhommakewagesatorjustabovethecurrentminimum wageareforcedtorelyongovernmentassistancetothetuneofalmost$7billionannually.Additionally,a recentanalysisfoundthatraisingtheminimumwageto$10.10anhourwouldreducenecessaryspending onfoodstampsby$4.6billionannually.
