Terror of the Buffalo
For many months, buffalo had been killed in their hundreds by an Indianknown as “Terror of the Buffalo”. He used to kill for the fun of hunting, notalways for food. The buffalo council gathered, and made a plan to stop theslaughter.Not long after this, Terror of the Buffalo was out hunting when he saw abeutiful girl sitting under a tree. He learned that she was called Shining Hairand falling deeply in her, he asked her to marry him. She agreed on onecondition: :Never, ask me about my family,”. She said. The young man gave herhis word; she married him, and they settled down happily together. After this,Terror of the Buffalo killed only for food.Shining Hair longed to see her family again.she asked Terror of the Buffaloto go with her, and to leave his weapons behind. They get out, and walked foralong time through the mountains. At last Shining Hair said: “My family lives onthe other side of this mountain, from now on, do exactly as I say”. She told himto roll twice on the ground; he did so and turned into a buffalo. Then she toochanged her shapes.By evening, they reached a great prairie on which grazed thousands ofbuffalo. “These are my people”. She said; “As you know, they have every reasonto hate you. I can change that if you pass certain tests. The first will be torecognize my closest relations among all this great herd”. She told him the dindistinctive markings and horn shapes by which he could pick them out. The
