Steps Introductory Activity Story Telling

Method Teacher asks pupils to talk about their fun activities during their weekend. Teacher puts up a poster of a funny cartoon character. Teacher talks about the things the character does using the present tense. Teacher puts up another poster of the same character that now looks different. The teacher explains what happened using verbs in the past tense. Teacher writes verbs on the blackboard. Pupils can be encouraged to expand on the story.

Notes Accept Pupils answers: Examples of sentences in the present tense: She drinks milk., She cycles to school. and She always feels happy.

Examples of sentences in the past tense: She changed her dress., Her face is dirty because she just cleaned her room., She accidentally spilled green paint on her arms. and Her shoes are dirty because she walked on the muddy field. To advise pupils to look out for key words such as: yesterday, last week, an hour ago, etc. Examples of words that can be used: played, walked, went, enjoyed, looked, saw

Teacher explains how the past tense is used and provides sample sentences. Pupils read passage on page 80 of Textbook. Teacher picks out verbs in the past tense. Pupils repeat with correct pronunciation. Teacher provides other words and pupils form sentences using the past tense.
