Detectives.( past simple)

Submitted by Gulshan Huseynli on 24 May, 2011 - 19:51
This activity helps practice affirmative, negative and question forms of the past.
Procedure: One volunteer is the detective and goes outside. You give a coin to one of the students in the
class to hide on their person - he or she is the thief. The detective returns and accusses any member of the
class:" Did you take the money?"The accused whether guilty or innocent, answers " No I didn't take the
money" X(names one of the others) took it. The detective then accusses X, using the same formula as
before, and so on, until ten or fifteen people have been accused (it is up to students to make sure that the
real thief is named). The detective watches the accused people and has tot ry to "detect" by their behaviour
which one is lying) Give him or her three "guesses"

16

2013/2014

Note: You can use Do you have/ Have you got? instead of "Did you take?". Alternatively imagine the criminal
did other crimes in order to practise other verbs: broke a window, stole a book, ate somebody's lunch, etc.

Introduce GREENIE

15

:
edmodo.com
:
esl.about.com/library/beginner/bl_bgpresorcont.htm
http://www.englishforeveryone.org/Topics/Verb-Tenses.htm
How unkind words can hurt ; words for an apology.
Before the lesson you need to cut out a silhouette of a person, using construction paper, avoiding any gender or race specific
characteristics. At the beginning of the lesson I introduce Greenie as a new classmate. Students laugh and notice how
different Greenie is and admit they would tease and pick on somebody like Greenie. I invite them to speak openly. When they
say something mean, I rip a part of Greenie's body and give it to a student. They wonder what to do with it, but it doesn't stop
others thinking of even meaner words to say. After everyone has had a chance, we talk about what we have done. Students
see the tape on my desk and want to tape Greenie back together. We first agree that our words hurt Greenie and we must
apologize. Every student thinks of appropriate words to say while reattaching the pieces. No matter how hard we try,
Greenie is not the same. I lead students to the understanding that scars never go away when we hurt someone's feelings.
Students write about what we have learned. I always leave Greenie on the classroom wall for a few days.
