Draft for Comments Only Doc: PCD 7(2771) C IS 3746 : December 2013 BUREAU OF INDIAN STANDARDS Draft Indian Standard GRAPHICAL SYMBOLS FOR COAL PREPARATION PLANT [Second Revision of IS 3746]
ICS 73.120; 01.080.30 FOREWORD (Formal clauses will be added later) This standard was first published in 1966 and subsequently revised in 1984. In coal preparation industry, flow diagram are widely used as a first drawing to show the basic items of major equipment and their relationship to one another in the entire process. Graphical symbols for the equipment used in a process, when connected by the flow lines, describe the sequence of operations in it. Keeping in view the continuous process of establishment of a large number of coal preparation plants in the country, it was felt that formulation of standard on graphical symbols will simplify the exchange of information among those concerned with the design, construction and operation of coal preparation installations. In the formulation of this standard due weightage has been given to international coordination among the standards and practices prevailing in different countries in addition to relating it to the practices in this country. The Sectional Committee responsible for the preparation of this standard felt that the standard should be revised again with a view to delete the graphical symbols of the equipments which are not used now a days and to bring it in line with ISO 561 : 1989 Coal preparation plant Graphical symbols. Most of the symbol given in ISO 561 : 1989 have been incorporated in this standard. The main points of difference relate to feeders, breakers, crushers and some types of screens. Additional symbols for sieve-bend or arc screen, fixed screen or grizzley, demagnetizer, liquid reagent feeder and heavy medium cyclone washer, etc, have been added. For symbols used in the basic process flow diagrams for representing the major items of equipment used by the petroleum and chemical industries, those recommended in IS 3232 : 1999 Recommendations on graphical symbols for process flow diagrams, piping and instrumentation diagrams (second revision) shall be used. 1 SCOPE This standard prescribes basic symbols for use in the process flow diagrams and others relating to coal preparation plants.
2 PRINCIPLES 2.1 The symbols incorporated in this standard have been selected in accordance with the following principles: a) The items of the plant listed shall be widely used for coal preparation and required to be identified on flow sheets. b) The symbols shall be easy to draw and distinguishable readily from one another. c) The symbols shall preferably give some indications of the principle of the separation involved, but shall not represent the appearance of any particular type of machine. 3 CONVENTIONS FOR THE DRAWING OF SYMBOLS 3.1 The following conventions shall be adopted for drawing the standard symbols: a) The plant symbols shall be shown by heavy lines and the product flow by light lines. b) In general the flow lines shall enter the symbols from above or from the left and shall leave the symbol downwards or to the right. c) Where more than one product enters or leave an item of plant, the numbers of entry, and exit arrows shall be varied accordingly. d) Graphical symbols have been grouped under 4 distinct process headings as follows: i) Receipt and pre-treatment of feed coal, ii) Cleaning, iii) Subsequent treatment of products, and iv) End product planning, storage and disposal. 3.2 An alphabetical index of symbols is given in Annex A for information only.
