The Facebook Home Page Update
October 2009
Overview
Facebook is changing the user experience on its home page, creating two news feeds: one feed whichdisplays friends’ most interesting activity since the user logged in last, and the other streaming activity inreal-time as the user watches. Overall, the changes to Facebook make the platform more focused on showingevents in real-time – on the old homepage design, as new items were posted they would accumulate until theuser clicked the “show new posts” link at the top of their feeds. With the new design, when a user logs in, theexpectation is that they will first view activity that occurred since they last logged in, and then switch over tothe real-time view where they can see friends’ activities as they happen.
What is changing?
After the changes roll out this week, when a user logs in, the news feed they initially see will be a list of the “most interesting” stories that occurred since they last logged in,called the “Top News” view. Although Facebook has not released whatspecifically constitutes the mostinteresting stories, it’s likely that acombination of Comments and Likesplay a strong determining role. The “Highlights” section will be eliminated, since the “Top News” view fulfills asimilar function. The user can thentoggle between that view and the “Recent Activity” view, which is a streamof real-time activity on Facebook from their friends and brand pages they’refans of.Organic fanning, event RSVPs, and virtual gift stories are also returning tothe activity stream, meaning that Facebook engagement ads that encouragethose behaviors will have a greater ability to penetrate through friendnetworks. Another significant change, especially for marketers buildingpages, is that the “Suggestions” section, which prior to the updatesuggested a single page based on the preferences of a user’s friendnetwork, will start containing two suggestions instead.
