SALIVA is returning to the rock scene with "Rise Up", their ninth studio effort and second since the departure of original singer Josey Scott. What the North American hard rock and metal scene needs right now is an infusion of youth and some new blood. Enter Anti-Mortem, an Oklahoma quintet whose combined average age is just 21-years-old. Raised on southern rock and heavy metal, the band doles out bottom heavy and groove-laden anthems on their upcoming debut album, New Southern. And, as with all the metal greats theyve learned from, a modern sense of melody also infuses every track. Singer Larado Romo, who sings with the vim and vitriol of a younger, more virile version of Megadeths Dave Mustaine, and the range of Disturbeds David Draiman, reveals the bands goal and thats to drag rock n roll back to the forefront. Hard rock is stagnating, he acknowledges. We want people to think, Rock has balls again. Anti-Mortem, whose name is based on the Latin term which means preceding death, can trace their humble beginnings back to 2008. Larado was in middle-school and the rest of his now-bandmates were in high school. He was drafted into the mix by his older brother, guitarist Nevada. Despite the difference in age, the members meshed because underneath it all, they were music fanatics who loved playing their instruments and enjoyed listening to classic rock. They were fully immersed in the rock of the 70s, 80s and 90s. Then they discovered metal and the rest is Anti-Mortem history. For New Southern, Anti-Mortem worked with veteran producer Bob Marlette (Shinedown, Seether, Black Stone Cherry), who helped them channel their varied influences and inspirations into a cohesive and seamless mix. Incredibly prolific, to date they have penned a whopping 100 songs as a band, and come up with a new song or a new riff every week. We have so many writers in our band and we all have different tastes, Romo says. Once you get through a full listen to New Southern, you will find yourself not believing that musicians as young as the members of Anti-Mortem could craft such a solid album. They play with the skill of seasoned vets, yet they have the fire in their bellies that define up-and-coming bands determined to make a go of it and to be heard. Explaining the albums name, Romo concludes, The title New Southern describes our way of life and our mindset. Its the same attitude, the same anger and the same resolution of the rebels that have lived before us, that always stood up for whats right, not whats easy. Those bands made an impact because of how they carried themselves and the messages they gave us in their music. Since the bands break up in 2009 the members have been busy with side projects, art, engineering, and touring. Enough time has passed and its now time to open up the vaults and start reissuing some of out of print titles. ISIS will release a re-mastered edition of their third album Panopticon on April 29th via Ipecac Recordings. Panopticon was released in 2004, and has been out of print for over a year. Former band vocalist/guitarist Aaron Turner said of the new outing: After some years away from the material, Panopticon now feels like the most optimistic of all the Isis albums, dark as the subject matter may be. Giving voice to my concerns about the loss of privacy and the deterioration of personal freedom through the lyrics on the album made those subjects weigh less heavily on my mind. Something about the sound of the songs feels open and bright to me as well post-millennial depression and pre-apocalyptic paranoia hadnt yet taken hold I suppose. Panopticon also feels like a turning point to me in the trajectory of Isis, and serves as a personal placemarker for me in terms of how the world of music and music consumption was shifting radically around that time. Things have certainly become cloudier since then and more uncertain in that way the subject matter of Panopticon also now seems a bit premonitory. Ex-drummer Aaron Harris (now of Palms) also shared his thoughts on the re-release: I got the check disk from the manufacturer the other day and listened to Panopticon all the way through to make sure things were good to go. It was like taking a journey back in time. When Isis was playing these songs regularly I wasnt able to enjoy them as a listener. Now that I havent played these songs in years theyve taken on a whole new identity for me. Mika Jussila did an amazing job with the re-master. The record has more detail and dynamics now. I feel that re-masters sometime ruin the integrity of records, but I feel that fans will really appreciate this re-master, and maybe find a new appreciation for Panopticon, as I have. New packaging and a 12 page booklet created by Turner will also be included.

Born as Ellas Otha Bates (later as Ellas McDaniel due to his adoption) in 1928, Bo Diddley learned how to play violin at an early age. He received his first guitar at the age of 12. Upon his first involvements with the 708 club in Chicago, he created a sensation in 1951 through his own style and his selfmade equipment: a tremolo made from an old clock and auto parts. His self-made guitar with a rectangular body out of Bakelite would eventually become his trademark. In 1956 Bo Diddley received his first record deal from Chess Records for a single with the titles Bo Diddley and Im A Man. Willie Dixon also appeared on this single. In the years that followed Bo Diddley was always to be heard on the charts (in 1960 with the single Roadrunner) and developed into a versatile musician who hit charts time and time again. Bo Diddleys influence has remained the same from the 70s through the very present. Even musicians from the punk and new wave scene have reverted back to using his songs. With the memories of the Sochi Winter Olympics still fresh in our minds, it seemed the perfect time to reissue White Rock, the soundtrack that Yes keyboardist Rick Wakeman composed for Tony Maylams documentary about the 1976 Winter Olympic games in Innsbruck, Austria (Maylam directed a Genesis concert film around that time, too, and the two films played as a wellreceived double feature in the U.K.). The genius of Wakemans music is such that you dont necessarily need to see the film to enjoy the soundtrack or, for that matter, to figure out what Olympic images each composition accompanied, but for those keeping score, the ski jump, luge, downhill skiing, ice hockey and figure skating events were all the lucky recipients of the composers interpretation. With the release of Resolution, Xavi Reijas trio has delivered the goods first displayed in 2009s DVD of the Electric Trio (Live at Casa Murada). That release showcased three young and gifted progressive jazz players with impressive credentials and undeniable chops but, more importantly, brimming with fresh ideas. Shedding both keys and sax from the Xavi Reija Quintet format, the Catalan drummer from Barcelona has chosen to construct a leaner sound machine that, through careful sharpening of the remaining weapons in the arsenal, has produced some of the finest post-rock avant jazz out there today. Muscular polyrhythmic grooves of propulsive drumming and Bernat Hernandez funk bass riffing lay the solid foundation for innovative guitar phrasings by Dusan Jevtovic which consider the space between the notes as significant as the notes themselves. And the notes? Elegantly played melodic jazz riffing and subtle volume pedalwork may ultimately yield to feedback and dissonance if the track calls for it. But the drum also waltzes. Delicate and thoughtful kit-work with deft guitar loops add texture and ambience to the sonic pallet making this trio feel more akin to a small orchestra scoring for some incredible film. There is an intelligence at work here a painterly approach that enthusiastically seeks to redefine the sonic possibilities that the trio format can bring to the table. Another extraordinary talent discovered by MoonJune Records' cosmopolitan honcho Leonardo Pavkovic.
Recorded in Los Angeles during two sessions in 2013, Surya Namaskar (Salute to the Sun, in Balinese language) represents a significant change from Joged Kahyangan. While bassist Jimmy Johnson (Allan Holdsworth, James Taylor, Flim & the BB's) is back from that session, this time the drummer is the much indemand powerhouse Vinnie Colaiuta (Herbie Hancock, Jeff Beck, Sting), with ubiquitous guitar session ace Michael Landau (James Taylor, Renegade Creation, Joni Mitchell) and drummer turned drummer/keyboardist Gary Husband (John McLaughlin, Jack Bruce, Allan Holdsworth, ) making valuable guest appearances on one track each. The sum total of Surya Namaskar is most definitely greater than its individual parts. Together with his two previous MoonJune recordings - Dawai in Paradise (January, 2013) and Joged Kahyangan (October, 2013) - Surya Namaskar paints the ongoing portrait of a guitarist who may be a superstar in the Indonesian pop-rock world as a founding member of the multimillion selling Gigi (celebrating this year their 20th anniversary), but whose lesser-known credibility and, more importantly, visibility as a jazz guitarist is slowly but surely on the ascendance, as more and more international progressive jazz fans discover the depth, the heart, and the profound spirituality of Dewa Budjana, at fifty a new guitar hero of strength, creativity and significance.

HE WAS THE man with the rocket firing guitar. Dubbed the Space Ace, the coolest member of 70s rock gods Kiss and a man who attracted a legion of fan followers of his own for reasons both good and bad. Aces devilishly potent guitar playing lent Kiss a sense of purpose and ambition that elevated them from amusing comic book crusaders to seriously dangerous heavy metal heroes. As with most things in life it couldnt last. Down but not out, Ace left Kiss in 1982 to pursue a solo career, one that was eagerly anticipated by legions of fans keen to sample his razor sharp riffs and quirky song writing in a brand new setting. AS A FOUNDING member and lead guitarist of Kiss, Ace Frehley - known affectionately as the Space Ace - was probably one of the most identifiable rock stars of the 70s. Indeed, his profile was so prominent that when the band hatched the brilliant idea of releasing four solo albums simultaneously, it was Aces record that not only sold the most but also attracted the best reviews. It was a fact that apparently still irritates the rest of Kiss to this very day. By the early 80s however things for Ace were getting decidedly shaky and, it must be said increasingly, out of control. Losing grip on his situation and his standing within the band, Aces departure in 1982 was almost inevitable. Fortunately, the Kiss Army remained loyal and eagerly awaited his return to active duty with Frehleys Comet, a project powered by him alone. Second Sighting, originally issued in 1988, was the second outing from this unit gathering together a working band that featured seasoned drummer Jamie Oldaker, ex John Waite bassist John Regan and, perhaps most importantly, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Tod Howarth, a man who had gained a stirling reputation as leader of cult AOR favourites 707 and live work with both Cheap Trick and Ted Nugent. This new 2CD, 50track set from Real Gone Music offers folks a chance to own some of the most reveredand rarerecordings in the history of American music. In 1946 and 1947, Bob Wills and His Texas Playboys cut nearly 400 full songs for Tiffany Music, Inc., recordings that came to be known as the Tiffany Transcriptions. These recordings were distributed only to radio stations on 16inch transcription discs, and were intended for airplay as part of a syndicated radio show featuring Wills and the Playboys. However, the transcriptions proved to be a financial failure, and Tiffany Music, Inc. folded by the end of the 40s, seemingly relegating the Tiffany Transcriptions to obscurity (and leaving over 200 songs in the can). But that was not the end of the story. The Tiffany Transcriptions were unlike anything else in the King of Western Swings discography. Typically recorded on a Monday in between tours, they usually consisted of on-the-spot arrangements of everything from Wills hits to western swing standards to sentimental ballads to blues and hot swing instrumentals, and the 16, 33 1/3 rpm recording format allowed some of the songs to be longer than the normal, 3-minute limitation of the 10inch, 78 rpm commercial records of the day. This meant that Wills and his incredible bandwith the great Tommy Duncan on vocalshad a chance to stretch out and have fun with the material. The result: the Tiffany Transcriptions are generally regarded as the best recordings Bob Wills and His Texas Playboys ever made. In 1970, Cannonball Adderley recorded a series of concerts that resulted in three cult classic live albums, of which this doublealbumproduced, like other landmark double albums of the time like Soul Zodiac and Soul of the Bible, by David Axelrodis the hardest to find. It captures Cannonball and the Quintet (brother Nat Adderley on cornet, Roy McCurdy on drums, Walter Booker on bass and George Dukefresh from replacing Joe Zawinul, who had left to form Weather Reporton keyboards) at the forefront of the burgeoning electronic jazz-rock fusion movement, sounding at times every bit like the early 70s band of Cannonballs former bandleader Miles Davis, except maybe even funkier and more out there. But Cannonball always had a populist streak to himafter all, the man had a Top 20 hit with Mercy, Mercy, Mercyand so The Black Messiah also features flat-out rock and roll (guest guitarist Mike Deasys Liittle Benny Hen) as well as dips into the soul-jazz style that had landed him on the charts several years earlier, all punctuated by his always entertaining between-song raps. The band is killer, too, with guests including, in addition to Deasy, percussionists Airto Moreira and Buck Clark, clarinetist Alvin Battiste and saxman Ernie Watts. How this fascinating double live albumwhich was recorded at the Troubadour in Los Angeles during the same concerts that yielded the album Music, You Allhas eluded reissue till now is anybodys guess, but our Real Gone Music/Dusty Groove release features liner notes by Cannonball devotee Bill Kopp, with original art and added photos. Road Island, originally issued in 1982, was Ambrosias fifth album and in many ways saw them returning to their progressive roots composing songs blessed with ambitious arrangements. This stylistic volt-face was in part emphasised by their choice of producer, Pink Floyd engineer James Gutherie, with recording partly undertaken in Londons famed Kinks owned Konk Studios. In addition, the album artworks illustrative calligraphy (undertaken by Ralph Steadman - one time illustrator of satirical publication Private Eye) was somewhat reminiscent of Pink Floyds The Wall, further emphasising their progressive rock roots.

As leaders of their own small jazz groups, Carn and Davidson have each released three CDs, all entirely comprised of their own original material. This collaborative project is an opportunity for both artists to reimagine their compositions for this chamber jazz instrumentation, shining new perspective on their existing repertoire. This 9-piece chord-less ensemble utilizes its seven horns as both melodic and harmonic devices, anchored by bass and drums. The Carn Davidson 9s unique sound is made stronger by an all-star lineup of prominent Canadian artists who are all exceptional ensemble players as well as outstanding soloists. The CD9 has already been featured at Torontos Rex Hotel Jazz Bar and the Toronto Downtown Jazz Festival.

Christopher J. Connelly and Jason C. Novak bridge the gap between waxtrax! era industrial and the future sounds of mass corruption.
Internationally known songwriter Chris Connelly (Ministry, Revolting Cocks) and producer Jason Novak (Acucrack, Czar, Acumen Nation) team up for classic waxtrax! Era sounds and styles. Industrial corruption duo Cocksure, the new project featuring Chris Connelly and Cracknations Jason Novak, will release the debut EP KKEP on January 31. The EP features the duos breakout track Klusterfuck Kulture, recently featured on the ColdWaves II Sampler compilation, as well as the track Assault on Cocksure 13 and remixes by Acucrack and Sanford Parker.
Described by Beverley as a very personal album, it features songs written throughout her entire career, from her very first song, Sweet Joy, to the previously unrecorded Nick Drake & Beverley Martyn song Reckless Jane which was started in 1974 when Drake lived nearby Beverley in Hampstead. We started writing the song as a bit of a joke, she says, When John and I lived in Hampstead Nick lived one stop down the tube line, and he would come around and babysit sometimes. I couldnt look at it for a long time after he died, but then finally I decided to finish it." When The Levee Breaks and Going To Germany are songs Beverley used to sing with The Levee Breakers. Another song, Women And Malt Whiskey is, in part, about John Martyn and other friends from the scene back then. The Phoenix and the Turtle is Beverleys first album in fourteen years and was recorded in Wales with guitarist and producer Mark Pavey; it also features contributions from bass player Matt Malley, (ex-Counting Crows) and drummer Victor Bisetti, (ex-Los Lobos) which were recorded by the magic of computer in California. The album still has that in-a-room feel, said Beverley recently, it sounds like an old style analogue record. Its very me, very transatlantic.
