The Geography of Equity Analysis CHRISTOPHER J. MALLOY* Article first published online: 2 MAR 2005 ,DOI: 10.1111/j.1540-6261.2005.00744.x
I provide evidence that geographically proximate analysts are more accurate than other analysts. Stock returns immediately surrounding forecast revisions suggest that local analysts impact  prices more than other analysts. These effects are strongest for firms located in small cities and remote areas. Collectively these results suggest that geographically proximate analysts possess an information advantage over other analysts, and that this advantage translates into better  performance. The well-documented underwriter affiliation bias in stock recommendations is concentrated among distant affiliated analysts; recommendations by local affiliated analysts are unbiased. This finding reveals a geographic component to the agency problems in the industry.

GIS-Based Environmental Equity Analysis A Case Study of TRI Facilities in the Pittsburgh Area Theodore S. Glickman, Dominic Golding, Robert Hersh-published in 2001
The issue of environmental equity has received considerable media attention in the United States recently, generating a flurry of activity among members of the environmental community, including the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the leading environmental groups. Many studies have investigated the existence of inequities in the distribution of noxious, toxic or otherwise unwanted facilities, and many more studies are ongoing. Most of these studies have  been conducted at a national or regional scale, and involve comparing the socioeconomic and demographic characteristics of host and non-host communities. The distribution of facilities is considered inequitable if the percentage of minorities is disproportionately higher or the socioeconomic status is disproportionately lower in the host communities. Census tracts and counties are the most commonly used unit of analysis because data are readily available in these forms from the U.S. Census Bureau. Relatively little attention has been paid, however, to the problem that using data in such an aggregated form may mask much that is significant in analyses of environmental equity, and little has been done to determine what the most appropriate units of analysis are for these kinds of studies. By comparison, this investigation finds that the unit of analysis chosen can have profound effects on the results of an equity analysis and their interpretation. It also demonstrates that geographical information systems (GIS) offer a powerful means of devising more appropriate units of analysis and examining such effects.
