 FRESHERS SPECIAL
WEL . COME to Uni!

WILL BARTON - CourseDirector, BA Advertisingand Media
“Working in a univer-sity is a bit like being inarming or sports. It hasa clear annual rhythm. Each year the samethings happen at thesame time. Just as theootball season startso with the CharityShield match, Uni startswith Freshers’ week.Even or old hacks likeme who have been hereor years, there’s a senseo new beginnings, newaces and new grass onthe eld.“Although the rst ewdays are going to bebusy and oten conus-ing, they should also beun and I hope the resto your time here willbe too. A lot o the timeyou’ll have to work hardand sometimes thingswon’t go quite the wayyou wanted but mosto you will nd your-selves in three years’time wondering howthey went so ast andsee yourselves ready tomake the next big movein your lie. Sometimesthings seem too muchor you to cope with.Whatever the problem, the rst step to solvingit is to talk - usually toyour personal tutor inthe rst instance, butyou should eel ree tocontact any member o sta i you need help. It’s what we’re here orand we can always nda way orward or you,so i things get tough, don’t be worried, em-barrassed or ashamedo asking or help.“You’re studying inan Art School and thatshould be hard work and un. I it ever stopsbeing either o thesethings then something’snot right, so let usknow.
We asked some o your uture coaches and mentors (aka The Media and Communication sta) to share theirreshers views and give you warm welcome.
“... there’s asense o newbeginnings, new aces andnew grass onthe eld.”...studying inan Art Schoolshould be hardwork and un.”“ ...ready tomake the nextbig move inyour lie.”

JOHN KEENAN – Associate Lec-turer“Freshers’ Week is the most impor-tant single week or students, notonly because you are introduced tothe sta and get your timetable, butalso because you get a avour o what university lie is. The reedomexperienced during this week can beboth rightening and wonderul andis oten a mixture o both. We all dealwith this in our own ways and there isno right or wrong way as long as youeel comortable.”He advises: “Try not to eel toopushed and pulled by pressures romother students or rom the expecta-tions o being a “student” and domake the most o what the universityoers: lectures, seminars and acili-ties. You are paying or this and it is awaste i you are not using it.”He adds: “I hope that you growthrough the three years o universityas people, that you orm riendshipsand good memories to last or a lie-time. University is what you make it.”
PAUL ADKINS – Skills Instructor“WELCOME! This is going to be areally hard year, so run away now …or prepare or a lie changing experi-ence.”Paul hopes the new generation o reshers will remember to bring apen and some paper, underlining theimportance o soberness. He believestime and experience is what setsapart one generation o reshers romanother.
SPENCER MURPHY – Senior Lec-turer“It’s a nervous time or the resher’s,my heart goes out to every one o them! You don’t know anyone, youdon’t know where anything is…we’ve all been there. As i this eelingonly last about a week anyway! Butit might be unny to think that it canbe nervous or the lecturers as well…we don’t know anyone either and wehave to stand there and wae on!”“In the current climate, with allthe gloom and doom about theeconomy, student debt, unemploy-ment and blah blah blah … Anyincoming student could be orgivenor eeling a little apprehensive i not downright depressed! But this isgreat time to begin your degree in somany ways. The job market will pick up and students will be in the perectposition with their wonderul degreerom Coventry University! Ok, maybeI’m going a bit over the top...”Spencer hopes this generation o reshers will bring: “New ideas, newperspectives…but in short just anenthusiasm and a passion or whatthey’re doing! Students teach me justas much (i not a lot more!) as I couldpossibly teach them.”
JOE PAXTON - CSAD Faculty Chair“I’d like to take this opportunity togive a warm welcome to all the newstudents joining the School o Artand Design; and a warm welcomeback to those progressing to theirnext year. I am your Faculty Chair, which means I am your representa-tive to the Students’ Union or thisacademic year. Within the next ewweeks every student will have theopportunity to get involved withthe Students’ Union by becoming aCourse Rep. Those elected to CourseReps will also have the chance to be-come a Faculty Board rep, meaningurther involvement in our StudentUnion. In the mean time, I’m your pri-mary contact or any problems youhave with your courses and universityexperience. Never hesitate to contactme or stop me or a chat!”

T
he anticipation o going touniversity had drawn upon meall summer and then suddenlyI was there, eeling the vibeand the ustering o Fresher’s Week.I was looking orward to meetingnew riends and colleagues, while,at the same time, I was eeling theshear ear o going into big lecturehalls, way larger than your averageclassroom. But with many riendly, more experienced people around, Iwas soon right at home in the buzz o reshers. When the day came to move in tohalls, my mind was all over place, what to say to people, where to go,what to do. Where do you begin?Ater all that I had to say goodbye tomy parents which was something Iwas glad, but scared o all together.I basically moved rom the comorto my own home, rom the care o my parents, sent out to ght theworld on my own. There was so muchto take in and it seemed like therewas not enough time to do it; everycorner I turned to there was someoneeeding me with more inormation. The thing I was mostly lookingorward to was obviously the socialaspect o Freshers Week, the op-portunity to meet new people andexplore Coventry city centre. Notonly within the events organised bythe university but also within thoseorganised outside the sports clubsand societies. There are so many op-portunities available to reshers thatI elt overwhelmed and it was hardor me to choose. At rst, I went oralmost everything and then I real-ized this really wasn’t possible. Soinstead, I picked out all o the thingsthat I was interested in and wentrom there. I ound that on MondaysKasbah was the best place to go or acheap drink and a cheap night out;and lava ignite on a Wednesday wasalso a very lively night. Still, as I dis-covered throughout resher’s week, there were plenty o social eventsadvertised that it was better or meto just ollow the crowd. I gured thatwould get me out and about andhelp me learn everything I neededto know as I was going along, well atleast in terms o a good night out.I didn’t expect Fresher’s Week tobe as jammed packed as it was, Iwas constantly on the go and thisstill continued even ater that. Someo the acilities and advice servicesavailable during Fresher’s Week werethings like healthcare and livingadvice, which I think I should havetaken into account. Apart rom thatFresher’s Week is just a un and excit-ing week to get your student headaround things and settle in appropri-ately. Hope you have a great deal o un on yours!
