Understanding confidence. The world we live in will always have a major impact in how confident we feel. The pace of life in today’s world means that there are numerous factors thataffect our confidence levels. The truth is that according to what’s happeningin the world around us impacts greatly upon our personalities and changesour confidence levels on a regular basis. We need to understand thesecretsof confidence. The word confidence surrounds us these days and our success is said to beborn from it. There are very few situations where a lack of confidence is anadvantage. Having confidence allows us to be assertive and to make our wayin the world. In fact it is such a crucial part of everyone’s personality that it isamazing that there has been very little research into it. If we couldunderstand what things make us unique we could better understand theelements that affect our confidence. If we think about things that happen to us in life, we can begin to understandhow our confidence is derived. Take your first job, or even you first day atschool, you will have been apprehensive, hesitant and unsure. You wouldseek approval from others that you were conducting yourself correctly or thatthe actions you were taking were correct. Then after a short while yourconfidence will have grown, you will be familiar with your surroundings andthe tasks expected of you and you are able to complete them without theapprehension and concerns that you had initially. So we have to think about where confidence comes from. The make up of every individual is completely different. Have you noticed in a group of people there are some that just exude confidence and seem to have littleconcern about how they are perceived. Much of it stems from our biologicalmake up and our past experiences perhaps in childhood or adolescence. Some people are naturally shy whilst others are extrovert and outgoing. Butwhat is it that makes us the way we are?A major influence on the confidence that we have as adults is influenced byour parents. Some parents allow individuals to grow with freedom anddevelop their personalities naturally and with this confidence is instilled.Unfortunately many parents often focus on the negative aspects of a childand their only objective is to try and remove the child’s limitations or improveupon them. This can have very detrimental effects on a child’s developmentand restrict their confidence immensely.Following childhood, being accepted by our peers has a major influence onour level of confidence; such is the desire to be liked and popular.
