An Introduction to Astronomy:Stars and Galaxies
University of SydneyCentre for Continuing EducationSpring 2005
Lecture 2
Characterising andclassifying the stars

When we look at the stars, we see:
position
brightness
colourWhat we want know are intrinsic quantities like
how big
: radius
how bright
: luminosity
how hot
: temperature
how heavy
: mass
what it is made of
: compositionIn this lecture, we’ll explore how we get from what weobserve to the information we really want.

The first thing we need to know is the distances tothe stars. We can measure distances using
parallax
.This is the same technique surveyors use when theywant to measure the distance to an inaccessibleplace.
