Artist Statement
In Adam Shield's continuing work he studies the solitariness of thepainter and the way in which one forges a relationship with one's subject. Hisgestural painting encapsulates the transitory and fleeting nature of humanmotion, simultaneously exploring the fragility of the human form. Flashes ofthickly-applied colour allow for accidental marks to become the focal point ofhis pieces. The fluidity of his subject is mimetically transposed via his abilityto layer colour and form through mixed media. In his latest series of paintings, he explores the boundaries of his work:through photographing previously unfinished paintings and creating newworks on these photographs, Adam Shield considers the finality of the artist'sinput and the culmination of a painting's journey. The conventional boundaryof the completed painting is eschewed. For the artist, repainting is recycling, and in the process of recycling comes metamorphosis and evaluation.
