KING
Christ the King Mission Statement

The People of Christ the King in Lombard are a welcoming, vibrant faith community building the kingdom of God through our many ministries. We celebrate our diversity, seeking to realize the gifts of each member of our parish, as we are all joined together under one faith, in a spiritual journey of evangelization, service to others, and a reverence for all life. In the Eucharist, we find new life, and bring this life to others through stewardship, education, and worship.

Page 3

The number forty is used by God to represent a period of probation, trial, chastisement, testing or judgment (the length of time necessary to accomplish some major part of Gods plan in his dealings with various portions of mankind). So 40 days refers to an appropriate amount of time for God to have His way. And 40 days can change a life. Give Up, Take Up, Lift Up! In his Lenten message for 2014, Pope Francis takes inspiration from the words of St. Paul(Cor 8:9), and asks us to contemplate Paul's invitation to live "a life of evangelical poverty." We can begin to embrace this call by fasting from or "giving up" material things, including foods, that are superfluous to our basic needs; "taking up" charitable habits that are directed to helping and caring for others; and "lifting up" our brothers and sisters who are in need through giving alms, praying and participating in devotional practices. "In the poor and outcast we see Christ's face; by loving and helping the poor, we love and serve Christ." Pope Francis, Message for Lent 2014. . .
"giving up" Prayer Rushing Some of my time The sin in my life Sinful habits Food and Drink in excess Snacks More of our excess finances Excess clothing Excess food "taking up" Stations of the Cross Rosary Daily reading and Meditation More time for God in Prayer More time for others: family friend, neighbors Service to others Increased support of parish, diocese, Catholic Relief Services, etc. "lifting up" My Family My parish and church The wider world The poor The hungry The homeless As above poor, hungry, homeless throughout the world Christ in others

Fasting

Almsgiving

By taking an active approach to the three traditional pillars of Lenten observance, prayer, fasting and almsgiving, we recognize that to be evangelists, we must first be evangelized ourselves. This Lent, we also have urgent reason to focus prayer and attention on peace in the Holy Land, as our leaders work to resolve the longstanding Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and peace between Russia, The Ukraine and World powers. The Church asks us to surrender ourselves to prayer and to the reading of Scripture, to fasting and to giving alms. The fasting that all do together on Fridays is but a sign of the daily Lenten discipline of individuals and households: fasting for certain periods of time, fasting from certain foods, but also fasting from other things and activities. Likewise, the giving of alms is some effort to share this world equallynot only through the distribution of money, but through the sharing of our time and talents. Contemplate the meaning and origins of the Lenten fasting tradition in this reflection. In Lent, the baptized are called to renew their baptismal commitment as others prepare to be baptized through the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, a period of learning and discernment for individuals who have declared their desire to become Catholics. The key to fruitful observance of these practices is to recognize their link to baptismal renewal. We are called not just to abstain from sin during Lent, but to true conversion of our hearts and minds as followers of Christ. We recall those waters in which we were baptized into Christ's death, died to sin and evil, and began new life in Christ. Catholics are also encouraged to make going to the Sacrament of Reconciliation a significant part of their spiritual lives during Lent. Take advantage of the additional times available for this Sacrament of Gods forgiveness, healing and invitation back to close friendship with Himself and others. Deacon Frank Lillig

Sherry Rochford came on Ash Wednesday to provide a prayer service with ashes for all of us! Mrs. Placey set up Stations of the Cross candles in the chapel for every Friday so that everyone in the Academy could participate with Walk with Jesus on the Way of the Cross. Our focus will be prayer, good deeds, and collecting pennies for Water for Life. We will hear stories about Noahs Ark, Jonah the Whale, St. Patrick, and St. Joseph. There are many art projects and cooking projects that go with our curriculum. We will be collecting items to make care packages for t he sick children at Good Samaritan Hospital. We are happy that spring is almost here! We hope that everyone has a wonderful time preparing for Easter! The Academy Staff Jeremiah Day April 5, 2014 at Mundelein Seminary

Attention All Parishioners

When writing checks to Christ the King, please make sure the check is dated, numeric and written amount is the same, and there is a signature. Recently, there have been some instances with checks being returned from the bank. This causes problems in our accounting system. Also, if donating to St. Vincent DePaul, make sure you issue a separate check made payable to them. Thank you for your consideration and help. Elaine Colpo-Ward, Business Manager

The residents of Beacon Hill retirement community and residents of the health care center, along with the residents of Lexington community and health care center, your parish community that loves and cares about you wants to thank you for being part of our Christ the King worshiping community on Sundays. No matter how cold, snowy or hot it may be, like a postman, some of you come on the bus to Mass. A few manage to drive. It is especially nice when your families pick you up and worship with you at CTK. As our ushers/greeters welcome you each Sunday, I see a sense of warmth and kindness towards each other coming in and leaving. The staff knows how difficult it is for you when our masses run longer and your bus is waiting. Somehow, you all get up and hop on that bus. As I look out on the assembly each mass, I see so many children of older parents helping you into your seat, assisting and walking with you to Holy Communion. With such gentleness and care they do what they are honored to do. They are honored, as I was in caring for my elderly parents, to bring you to Church. I am sure, after all these years, you still need to tell your childrenpay attention, give my offertory envelope, etc.. We are never too old to be reminded, right? I hope that our young parishioners in grammar, high school and college pick up that example of giving back to their parents all that their parents have given to them. One experience, among many, I will take with me to my new parish is the great love that older adult children in our parish have for their parents, at Mass and at home. One day when we as children meet God, He will tell us, well done, good and faithful servant. The only question we may have is who will take care of us when we get older and want to come to Mass? Also, we are grateful for the residents that come to Liturgy of the Word with Holy Communion on Sundays at your residences. Blessed Lent+ Fr. Jarosz
