ctober is more than just a wonderfultime of year when the leaves change – and yes, there is actually a subtleseasonal change in Florida – and thetemperatures actually drop.For Toastmasters, October is a time tocelebrate! It marks our 85
th
anniversary.Toastmasters International membershipgrew by 5 percent last year and MarionUnited continues its own steady growth.Our exposure in the world has expandedgreatly since the launch of our club Website last month. Visitors have checkedout Marion United from throughout thearea and state as well as from as far asaway as Berkely, Calif., Minneapolis,New York City, Houston, Frankfurt,Germany and Clondalkin, Ireland!In fact, the Clondalkin Toastmasterswants to partner with us to share ideasfor promoting and growing our clubs.Wouldn’t it be great to coordinate a club-exchange in addition to an exchange ofideas? Now

Fear and loathing on the podium 
Believe it or not, your chances of dying ofstage fright are extremely slim. You might
feel 
as if you are dying on the stage, butchances are good your audience won’teven notice your wobbly knees andsweating armpits. Even the best speakerswere once terrified novices, feeling thesame symptoms as you when facing anaudience. Fear no more! Toastmasters isthe best place to learn, to build yourconfidence, and to push yourself outsideyour comfort zone. It’s a safe place wherethere is no penalty for failure!

Know your material
- Pick atopic you’re interested in; usehumor, personal stories andconversational language.
Revise as necessary
-Workto control filler words: practice(with a timer), pause & breathe
Know the audience
-Greetsome of the audiencemembers as they arrive; it iseasier to speak to friends thanto strangers.
Know the room
-Arrive early,walk around the speakingarea, practice using the micand any visual aids.
Relax
-Begin by addressingthe audience, it buys you timeand calms your nerves. Pause,smile and count to three.
Visualize

Imagine yourselfspeaking, your voice is clearand confident; visualize theaudience applauding

Don’t apologize

Collin provided the highlight ofJustin’s first speech as theproud dad demonstrated hisson’s attempt to sit whilerefusing to let go of his hold ofthe upper bar of his playpen.During his Ice Breaker, Justinexplained why he joinedToastmasters: “my career is whyI’m here.”Justin said that he is often calledon to make presentations togroups of bankers. “Mypresentation skills aren’t wherethey need to be and I’m hopingJustin went from guest to IceBreaker in one short week and isnow on his third speech! He is athird generation Ocalan and thirdgeneration Certified PublicAccountant. He has been a CPAfor nearly four years with the firmof Turner & Lozada, PA . Beforethat, he was a tax consultant withDeloitte.Justin earned both his bachelor’sand master’s degrees from theUniversity of North Florida. He andhis wife, Lindsey, married in May2007 and the couple now has abeautiful 10-month-old son, Collin.
