Intro
Way Out East
Congratulations, you just made a very, very wise choice. Whether you’ve playedthe
Way of the Samurai
series in the pastand decided to dip your toe into the pool of next-gen feudal Japanese sandbox fun or just snagged it on a lark, you’ve scoopedup one of the most unique open-endedgames available today. Plus, you’ve gotthis handy dandy little cheat sheet to helpspeed you along whatever path you’vechosen, something we’re hoping willhelp you get even more out of an alreadyincredibly varied game. When one hears the phrase “sandboxadventure,” there tends to be immediatevisions of jacking cars or getting intomassive shootouts. As there were neithercars nor semi-automatic weapons in Japanduring the Warring States Era, you’ll haveto re-think the concept of open worldhere. That’s a good thing, though, becauseunlike other games that promise unlimitedfreedom, in
Way of the Samurai 3
, youreally can do just about anything youwant. Be the good guy, follow the code of bushido and opt to side with one of twomajor warring factions, defend the villagethat takes you in after a massive, bloodybattle or simply ignore it all and pickand choose your allegiances as you see
t…or become a walking angel of death,
slaughtering bandits and innocents alike.More than any previous installment,
Wayof the Samurai 3
offers you the ability tocut right to, well, cutting as soon as you’dlike. Any conversation can be cut shortwith a quick unsheathing of your friendlyblade (of which there are more than ahundred, but we’ll get to some of those ina bit), and you’re free to cut down anyoneyou’d like — from the lowliest peasant tothe head of an entire clan — and you cando it whenever you wish. Start a game, charge straight up to a castle gate, headinside and introduce the lord of the land tothe business end of your weapon of choice, then watch the consequences. The results of those actions are at their
heart the denition of what this game
offers — what the series has alwaysoffered, but the newest entry into the seriesis deeper, more varied, and adapts in agreater number of ways than ever before.Multiple endings, dozens upon dozens of weapons (including the ability to makeyour own from hundreds of different parts)and a destiny that will change accordingto your actions are all waiting for you.Hopefully, though, you’ll learn about a fewof the least obvious options in the comingpages. After all, what good is a strategyguide if you can’t get at least a few super-secret hints along the way?

History
 In the Beginning
Brought to you by the ne folks at
Acquire, the same developer responsiblefor the original Tenchu games, Way of theSamurai has always taken a semi-historicalangle. Though the situations and peoplein the games don’t follow actual eventsthroughout Japanese history to the brushstroke, they paint at least a faithful pictureof the cultures, activities, and practices of the time. The series started back on the PlayStation2 more than seven and a half years ago,and starred Kenji, a ronin (masterlesssamurai) that wandered into the middle of
a conict between the Akadama clan and
the Kurou family in the small mountainvillage of Rokkotsu Pass.Way of the Samurai 2 followed a few yearslater, once again placing players in thegeta of a ronin (this time male or female),as they pass out at the gates of Amahara,
a central trading hub on a conict-ridden
island. Again, two main factions, the Aotocrime family and the magistrates, vie forcontrol of Amahara with the townspeoplecaught in the middle.Like the previous two games, Way of theSamurai 3 throws you in the middle of two major warring clans, the Fujimori andOuka, with the sleepy village of Takatane
suffering from the conict. Common to
all three games are the four basic optionsfor alignment: the village, either one of the two clans, or none of the above, and
you’re free to switch as you see t, not
just allowing for but actively encouragingmultiple playthroughs. In fact, with each playthrough, you’llaccrue Samurai Points, currency thatallows you to purchase unlockables, plusa unique title out of dozens of possibleoptions depending on how you’ve playedthat particular route through the story.Finishing a particular story, either livingor dying by the sword, will also unlockmore customization options, allowing yourcharacter to look wildly different from the
handful of choices your rst time out.
