Handling Meth Addiction In Michigan
 Narconon delivers methamphetamine talk to educate local community.
(1888PressRelease) October 20, 2009 - Red Ribbon Week is the oldest and largest drug prevention campaign in the country, and many drug education groups are gathering withschools, communities and churches to help promote the message of a drug-free life inhopes to stop drug abuse before it starts. Narconon Freedom Center, a residential drugand alcohol rehabilitation program located in Albion, Michigan, has been at the forefrontof the Red Ribbon Week activities in the state.This week Narconon Freedom Center visited a neighborhood watch meeting to educatethe local community about the dangers of methamphetamine abuse and themanufacturing of the drug. Supervisor Megan Werner-Brennan spoke about meth labs inthe local community and signs to look for regarding meth abuse and how to stop it."Many people are not sure of what to look for [in regards to methamphetaminemanufacturing] besides the 'over the counter' medications that have been pulled fromshelves,” she explains.”But what people use to make meth are items like cooking fuel,rubbing alcohol in large amounts etc and this was all a new thought to most who have nothad experience with the drug."According to the Substances Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration[url=http://www.oas.samhsa.gov/statesIndex.htm#2k4]Office of Applied Studies[/url]more than 4% of persons aged 12 or older in the state of Michigan reported using methone or more times during their life. In addition, 1% of young adults aged 18-25 reported past year methamphetamine use and an average of 500 treatment admissions per year as aresult of meth abuse.Methamphetamine is a central nervous system stimulant that can be manufactured fromcommon household chemicals in clandestine laboratories. Methamphetamine can beingested by swallowing, inhaling, injecting, or smoking. The typical high lasts 12 hoursor longer and some users will stay high for days. Side effects from use include irritability,nervousness, insomnia, nausea, depression and brain damage."In the community of Battle Creek Michigan alone, there have been three meth labsfound over the past month,” says Werner-Brennan. “These are dangerous and can dodamage to those innocent by-standers, especially the children that are in these homes.”The state of Michigan has had wide-spread use of stimulant drugs like meth starting inthe 1970s and recently experienced a spike in meth abuse since the 90s.
