How to get a Spanish Drving Licence
If you are a foreign resident of Spain and possess a valid driving licenceissued in another EU country, you can exchange it for aSpanish drivinglicence. If you do not have a licence you can take the Spanish test. Thisarticle discusses both options.
Assuming you have a valid licence from another EU country, you can take it to your localSpanish traffic office (DGT) and change it for a Spanish one. You will need to take thelicence and a copy, your residency certificate or card and a copy, 2 passport size photos(32x25mm) and your passport plus a copy. When you arrive at DGT queue at the "Informacion" line and request the forms necessaryto submit a licence application. These are:--Solicitud de Canje del Permiso de Conduccion (white with blue writing)- theapplication form--"Declaracion Jurada" - various statements to the effect that your licence is valid and youare not banned in your home country--"Talon Foto" -where you put a sample signature and they affix one of the photosComplete the paperwork and proceed to the cashiers' line where you will pay the fee for the new licence, currently 26€. You will then be sent to a final queue where you presentthe paperwork. If all is in order you will be given a receipt and told to await a phone calltelling you to return to DGT for the final step (it could be 6-8 weeks later) when youswap your old licence for the new one. Some DGT's operate slightly different systemse.g. you exchange your old licence for a temporary licence for use while the proper one is posted to you.If you want to change your licence without the hassle of trips to Trafico and the queues, you can use an Administration ("Gestor") service to do it all for you. My firm's service isdoor-to-door and costs around 40€. See link
