Description
This is a contemporary novel about Charley Howard, a struggling writer with a dubious past who becomes involved with a beautiful woman, Julia Reed, after a mysterious attempted shooting.
When Julia is also threatened, they escape to her mountain cabin only to be followed by the mysterious assailants.
As they become more involved and more threatened, aspects of Charley’s past emerge that suggest he hasn’t always been a writer of cheap novels.
When a team of killers locates the cabin and it is destroyed by explosives from a helicopter, they escape into the mountain wilderness. Charley separates from an injured Julia to attempt to stop the others one at a time.
Instead, he is captured by the leader and forced to take him to Julia. She tries to help but is shot instead. Julia had managed to shoot the leader but now Charley is faced with transporting the badly wounded Julia miles to civilization.
When he gets back to the cabin area, he is arrested by the police and taken away in handcuffs while Julia is transported to a hospital.
Desperate to be released from custody, he is forced to give the police a contact he had hoped to never use again. When he tries to return to his rented house, it has been destroyed in a fire and he is escorted from town by silent government agents.
