The real trick is to listen to the problems of others without deluding yourself into believing that you can heal them. While I was working in the mental health field I observed that what was healing was that there someone listening, someone who cares. It takes great patience to listen without believing that you can solve those problems. This is hard and often very frustrating. It is useful to remember that changes in others don't happen at your pace, but in theirs. The fact that you are listening and caring without forcing the other into a corner is what is important. If they don't solve their problems on your schedule, then that is your problem and not theirs. Taking care of yourself jsut means recognizing this. (But then again, what do I know?)

"take care of yourself" is something i have to tell myself from time to time bc i forget about me bc i worry about keeping everyone around me happy...sometimes i think i care too much about others and almost not at all about me... thanks for the comment rosedq

I think many people, including me, can definitely identify with this. Mostly we really do enjoy the helping, but it's hard to identify when it really is too much. People are always saying, "take care of yourself", but what does that really mean?
