Z ionism. Judaism. Semitism. How did
these three words come to mean al-
most the same thing? It’s not easy to
change the meaning of words so com-
pletely as to change the perception - in the
minds of the public - about the issues
swirling around them. Such is the power
of the Zionist movement that they can
even manipulate language to suit their
purposes.
How often have we heard someone say
they are anti-Israel, not anti-Jewish? How
often have we explained that, as Arabs,
we can’t be anti-Semitic because we are
Semites, too? Anti-Zionists, perceived to
be primarily Arabs and/or Arab
Americans, seem powerless to contradict
the perception that, as anti-Zionists, they
are anti-Semitic and anti-Jewish.
What if the anti-Zionist in question was
Jewish? Can a Zionist accuse an Orthodox
Jew of being anti-Semitic and anti-
Jewish? Why would an Orthodox Jew be
anti-Israel?
*Neturei Karta (Aramaic for "protectors
of the city") is the name that was given to
a group of Orthodox Jews in Jerusalem
who refused (and still refuse) to recognize
the existence or authority of the so-called
"State of Israel" and made (and still make)
a point of publicly demonstrating their po-
sition, the position of the Torah and au-
thentic unadulterated Judaism. The group
was founded in Palestine in 1938, after
splitting from Agudas Yisroel, which was
established in 1912 for the purpose of
fighting Zionism. Gradually lured by
money and honor they sold out to the
"Golden-Calf" of Zionism. Those who
wanted to maintain their faith and contin-
ue the struggle against Zionism disassoci-
ated themselves from Agudas Yisroel
(*nkusa.org).
Rabbi Yisroel Dovid Weiss is the
spokesman for Neturei Karta. Born in
New York in 1956, Rabbi Weiss belongs
to the Satmar sect, the largest Hasidic
group in existence. Originally from
Hungary, they are the most widely recog-
nized Orthodox Jewish sect.
There are approximately 13 million
Jews in the world today. Approximately 2
million identify themselves as Orthodox,
300,000 of which are Hasidic.
‘Chasid’ is a word that pre-dates the
group with which it is associated and sim-
ply means ‘above and beyond’. The Torah
says clothing worn by Jews ought to be
somber in color; Orthodox Jews will wear
gray, brown, or even dark blue but
Hasidic Jews wear only black. The Torah
says one’s head must be covered at all
times, to remind Jews that God is above
them; Orthodox Jews wear yarmulkes but
Hasidic Jews wear yarmulkes AND hats.
The differences between Orthodox and
Hasidic are, as Rabbi Weiss says, ‘…
about customs and slight nuances in mat-
ters of spirituality."
Speaking faster than we thought hu-
manly possible, the youthful and accom-
modating Rabbi Weiss apologized for ar-
riving late to meet us and placed a dish of
cake on the table for us before immediate-
ly launching, almost as if he were on fire,
into a crash course on Jewish customs,
history, and the destructive nature of
Zionism.
What is "Orthodox" Judaism?
“The Torah is divided into two: the
Written law, given by God to Moses in
the 5 books and the words of the Prophets;
and, the Oral law, which we believe God
gave to Moses at the same time. The
Torah says you should wear tzitzit
(fringes worn on the corners of a four-cor-
nered garment; the garment and fringes

together). The Torah doesn’t explain what
that is. The Oral law does. We believe it is
totally necessary to have both. To a reli-
gious Jew, were you to accept only the
Written law, then you are not religious.
Later, the rabbis saw it was too broad so
they condensed it. Maimonides made a
book called Mishnah Torah, and later still,
about 800 years ago, they made the
Shulchan Aruch. It was accepted amongst
all Jewish people that a religious Jew -
what we would call Orthodox today - is
somebody who is following the tenets of
the Torah who hasn’t strayed from the
Shulchan Aruch.
We believe any other type of Judaism is
a false representation. It’s like someone
saying they’re a Buddhist Jew.”
Suffering is Godly
In the early 1800s, the Reform
Movement turned the heads of many Jews
throughout Europe. The Torah, they
claimed, was not written by God so there
was no reason to follow it strictly. An in-
dividual’s personal autonomy took prece-
dence over Jewish laws and customs; the
person decided for themselves which cus-
toms to adopt, if any. "They have no prob-
lem making fire or anything on the
Sabbath because it’s not Godly by them
so they do whatever they want. According
to them, even homosexuality is legal. It’s
ridiculous," explained Rabbi Weiss.
Their beliefs and desire to assimilate
into mainstream society got them excom-
municated from the Orthodox Jewish
community. "We are forbidden from go-
ing to a Reform synagogue. We are for-
bidden from sitting next to them at meet-
ings. They have no right to represent
Judaism as their representation is false.
Orthodoxy is the only way because Torah
is a Godly thing and you can’t change it.”
Assimilation did not prevent Jews from
being persecuted, as they had hoped. Then
came Theodor Herzl. A non-religious
Reform Jew, Herzl believed that Jews
were persecuted because they were phys-
ically weak. His solution? Jews should
have a homeland.
"We believe," explained Rabbi Weiss,
"that the anti-Semitism suffered by
Jewish people is a Godly happening. God

wants to remind us, wherever we go in ex-
ile, to be humble. But he was non-reli-
gious, so to him it was just a fact: physi-
cally we are suffering; people are picking
on us. God was excluded from the equa-
tion. The reason we were sent into Exodus
2,000 years ago was not because God sent
us out for our sins but because of physical
weakness."
Preying on the Ignorant
Threats on his life will not stop Rabbi
Weiss from speaking openly and passion-
ately about the lengths to which Zionists
have gone and are still willing to go to
justify the existence of the state of Israel –
in total violation of the Torah, virtually
eradicating true Judaism, and almost com-
pletely destroying the friendship that once
existed between Arabs and Jews.
When the state of Israel was created,
Zionists traveled throughout the Middle
East, ‘encouraging’ Jews to move to
Israel. Lured by false promises of tightly
knit religious communities and the mis-
guided belief that the Zionists shared their
religious values, Jews made the aliyah
(the immigration to the Zionist state of
Jews from all countries).
Even after the aliyah from Yemen, thou-
sands of Yemeni Jews remained. Neturei
Karta was given permission by the
Yemeni government to visit the Jewish
communities there, which they did every
year for 40 years.
"It is so false, the portrayal of the
Muslim community mistreating the Jews.
They give total respect to our customs. In
Yemen, you aren’t allowed to drink alco-
hol but the Jews are allowed alcohol be-
cause we use it for our religious purposes.
Once, there was a fight between two
Jewish fellows and one ripped out the
peyis (long sideburns worn by Hasidic
men) of the other. They went to the
Muslim court, which sued the man re-
sponsible.
"When the Yemeni government started
dealing with the United States in the early
90s, the Zionists contacted Senators and
began applying pressure so they would
tell the Yemeni Jews to leave Yemen.
They published articles in Zionist news-
papers about how Yemeni Jews were be-
ing forced to convert to Islam, that they’re
being mistreated.
"In 1948, when the Zionists took Jews
from Yemen, they told them they would
put them in religious communities and
they didn’t. They took the children and
put them in kibbutzes. They forced them
to drop their religion. We knew that the
Zionists would do the same thing again.
We tried to tell the Yemeni Jews not to
listen to the Zionists. The Zionists prom-
ised them free housing."
What they got was their passports con-
fiscated, making it virtually impossible
for them to leave Israel and either return
to Yemen or go anywhere else once they
discovered that the Zionists lied to them.

Was the same thing happening in other
Arabic countries?
In the years after 1948, they kept writ-
ing that Jews were being mistreated.
There was an Iraqi Jew whose name was
Giladi… he published a book called ‘Ben
Gurion’s Scandals’, in which he wrote
about how Zionists were caught putting
bombs in synagogues in Arabic countries
in order to convince the Jews that Arabs
were trying to kill them.
Giladi said he joined the Zionist move-
ment more as a rebellion against his father
than anything else. His father begged him
not to join and eventually they were
caught putting bombs in synagogues and
he had to leave Iraq. He went to Palestine.
I asked him what his life was like in
Iraq. He said it was terrific. He told us that
when the rabbi went out, the Arabs would
have their children kiss the hem of his
dress.
Are all Hasidic Jews anti-Zionist?
Yes. When the Jews accepted the Torah,
we were given the land of Israel. God
stipulated that we must be on a much
higher level of spirituality. We have 613
commandments, the Talmud – our whole
life is dictated by laws of spirituality. We
have to be a light unto the nations of how
one should emulate God and be close to
God.
In the Bible it says, ‘…careful that the
land should not reject you if you will de-
file the land. I sent out the nation that was
there before because they defiled the land.
You must retain this level of holiness. If
you stick to this, you can stay in Israel. If
not, the land will reject you’.
We were sent into exile because we
were not spiritually up to par. When God
sent us into exile, we took three oaths. We
are forbidden from: returning to the land
en masse; rebelling against any nation;
and bringing about an end to the exile.
When the time comes, God will make a
metaphysical change in the world. All the
nations will recognize that there is one
God and all humanity will go up to serve
God.
Jews pray every day to return from ex-
ile to Israel. Herzl decided they would tell
them they (Zionists) are the beginning of
redemption. They preyed on the igno-
rance of the Jewish mind, that they would
believe this was the beginning of the end
of exile. All they needed was a land. They
picked Palestine (because Jews pray to re-
turn there).
All Jews were in opposition to Herzl.
Those who had dropped the religion were
opposed to him because they believed in
assimilation. Religious Jews were op-
posed because it violates the Torah.
Second Class Citizens
But you have "religious" Jews in Israel.
You have "religious" Jews in the
Knesset.
Religious Jews started Aguda to fight
Zionism. When the Zionists came to
Palestine, the religious Jews already liv-
ing there co-existed with their Arab
neighbors in harmony. They formed a
rabbinate to fight the Zionist movement.
The rabbinate formed Aguda to fight
Zionism in Europe.
Aguda is a right wing Zionist group.
Yes. In the 1930s there was a breach.
The Jewish community in Palestine sur-
vived on donations sent from European
Jews. The rabbis in this community were
considered the holiest of the holy. They
had to be supported by their followers so
they could continue their duties. The
Zionists put a stop to these donations.
They were well connected with the heads
of European governments and presented
themselves as the representatives of
Jewish people. Aguda tried to fight them.
When the state of Israel was created,
there was a split from Aguda. One half
formed the Edah Hacharedis (‘God
Fearing Community’) who said they did-
n’t want anything to do with the state of
Israel. They would survive without any
funding. They sent a letter to the
Zionism is the greatest manufacturer of anti-Semitism

Secretary General of the UN, telling him
that the Jews didn’t want to be a part of
the Jewish state. They, like the Palestinian
Arabs, were ignored.
The other half said they couldn’t exist

If you lived there, would you call your-
self an Israeli Jew or a Palestinian Jew?
I would call myself a Palestinian Jew.
You keep saying how you lived in total
harmony. But history tells us of ‘dhim-
mis’.
Yes, Jews as second class citizens. We
as a Jewish people accept that we are in
exile. We have no problem living under
any nation. Let’s say that the United
States decided that, instead of being a
democracy, they wanted to be a Christian
nation. As Jews, we would accept living
under a Christian entity.

So what most people would call weak-
ness – being isolated in ghettoes, being
called Christ killers – you accept as
part of your exile?
To a certain extent, yes. We have no as-
pirations to become the leaders of these
states. We do have a certain system under
which we want to live. We don’t want to
be persecuted; we don’t want to be called
Christ killers. But we believe that if we
are persecuted, it’s not that person who is
persecuting us because of his own will.
We believe it is a Godly happening.
When Jacob was being persecuted by
his brother Esau, he went and gave him
presents, supplication. He begged, he
tried to pacify him, asking him what was
wrong. Whenever we have an enemy, we
try to speak to him and make peace. We
are forbidden to take up arms. We are
only to appease, bring them presents, that
they shouldn’t have any anger against us.
That is the Jewish way.
Holocaust was Godly Punishment
Doesn’t that give others a green light to
abuse you? Isn’t this what led to the
Holocaust?
This is what the Zionists use as their jus-
tification for the state of Israel. We call
that blasphemy. We believe that the
Holocaust could not have come about if it

were not the will of God. That doesn’t
mean that Pharaoh and the Egyptians
were right for enslaving the Jewish peo-
ple. They were punished for it. But at the
same time, it was a decree of God that the
Jews suffer; otherwise it would not have
happened.
But God is …
… the God of compassion. We believe
God is the Almighty. He can stop any-
thing. Everything is the will of God.
Sometimes we can understand the will of
God. Sometimes we can’t. But to say it is
because of our physical weakness and that
God wasn’t there is blasphemy.
Did you say once in a speech that the
Holocaust happened as punishment for
the creation of the state of Israel?
It’s one of the reasons.
But the state of Israel wasn’t created
yet.
In the Talmud it says that if we trans-
gress these oaths, we will be hunted down
like animals. When the rabbis were being
led to the gas chambers, they said it hap-
pened because they didn’t speak up
enough about the transgression of the
essence of Judaism - which is exile - that
God is with us in exile and he is keeping
us in exile, that we stood by silently when
the Zionists started propagating their is-
sues.
You lost family in Auschwitz?
All of my parents’ families in Hungary
were killed. My aunt told how she saw her
mother shot in front of her.
I didn’t become a Zionist because of
that. We didn’t say, ‘therefore God wasn’t
there’. Some of them could have saved
themselves had they dropped Judaism.
They could have run to some Christian ar-
eas.
The whole reason they gave their lives
is because they wanted to stay in the
Jewish belief. To turn around and do what
Zionists have done – it’s like my grand-
parents died for nothing.
Why don’t Orthodox Jews seek more
publicity to spread their message?

to promulgating ourselves. We are forbid-
den from trying to convert someone to
Judaism. We believe that every person is
Godly and to accept Judaism is a yoke be-
cause you can’t give it up. Then, if you
decide it’s too hard and drop it, you are a
sinner. We really try to be insulated and
not sell our views.
Then came Reformed Judaism and
Zionism and they were making them-
selves representatives of the Jewish peo-
ple. All of a sudden, we were put in the
position of speaking to the press. Rabbis
were murdered in Sephardic lands when
they tried to speak out. Then there are the
politicians. They don’t get an opportunity
to speak because the minute you speak out
against Israel, you’re labeled an anti-
Semite. The minute anyone writes any-
thing against Zionism or against Israel,
they are accused of being an anti-Semite.
How can an Arab be an anti-Semite?
Exactly. ‘Semite’ just means a descen-
dant of Shem. But Zionism uses our situ-
ation of suffering to further their cause.
We believe they were the cause, spiritual-
ly, of the Holocaust. They abetted Hitler.
Our rabbis tried to approach Eichmann in
Hungary. They stopped killing the Jews in
Hungary for a month or two because we
made a deal with them to buy the Jews
from the Germans. They needed the mon-
ey. It was going to cost about 50 dollars
per truckload of Jews. The rabbis ap-
proached the Zionists who said they
would help. That was a farce.

In a 1960 interview with Life magazine,
Eichmann related details of meetings he
had with Zionist representative Dr.
Rudolph Kastner:
"I now concentrated on negotiations with
the Jewish political officials in Budapest .
. . Among them Dr. Rudolph Kastner… He
agreed to help keep the Jews from resist-
ing deportation - and even keep order in
the collection camps - if I could close my
eyes and let a few hundred or a few thou-
sand young Jews emigrate illegally to
Palestine. For keeping order in the
camps, the price . . . was not too high for
me . . . Dr. Kastner's main concern was to
make it possible for a select group of
Hungarian Jews to emigrate to Israel . . .
He was not interested in old Jews or those
who had become assimilated into
Hungarian society. But he was incredibly
persistent in trying to save biologically
valuable Jewish blood, that is, human ma-
terial that was capable of reproduction
and hard work.
Zionism is Killing Judaism
If Israel agreed to a two-state solution,
you don’t believe that would stop the
bloodshed?
No. We believe that making our own en-
tity is a rebellion against God and it will
not be successful. If Palestinians decide to
go along with a two state solution, we
look at them as compassionate for allow-
ing Israel to share their land, but we can
never recognize the Israeli half of this two
state solution.
Hezbollah are die hard anti-Zionists.
I’m not talking only about the military
part but the political part. Hamas, also,
are die hard anti-Zionists. Would you
be willing to meet with Khaled Mashal
or Sheikh Hassan Nasrallah?
We’ve tried to. We believe that the
Palestinian cause is just. It would be very
fruitful, very important for us to meet
them. They have to understand that there
are many Jewish people, whose voices are
not heard, who are living throughout
Palestine – what they call Israel - who are
truly anti-Zionist. We want them to un-
derstand that it is not Judaism that dictates
that we throw out the Palestinians.
During the years we were
being persecuted in
Christian countries, we
knew we had a safe haven
in Muslim communities.
We have no Zionist aspirations. Even
the anti-Zionists who are living in Israel
would give up the state in a second if they
knew they wouldn’t be murdered by the
Arabs but the Zionists keep brainwashing
them that the Arabs are going to kill them.
For you this is not political. It’s totally
religious.
Yes. Even if the Arab people were to say
to the Jewish people, ‘Take it all. We de-
cided to forgive you,’ we as Jewish people
refuse to recognize Israel. It is forbidden.
We would be thankful to the Arabs for be-
ing compassionate but we understand that
God forbids us to have the land even if it
was given to us. Jewish people are sup-
posed to emulate God, to be compassion-
ate; to oppress the Palestinian people is
totally against the will of God. It’s a dou-
ble tragedy. What’s being done to the
Palestinians is a tragedy and that it’s be-
ing done in the name of Judaism is a
tragedy.
Zionism is the greatest manufacturer of
anti-Semitism in the world. We were liv-
ing in Muslim countries, in dhimmis. For
us it wasn’t a problem. I saw total free-
dom in the community in Yemen. The
Zionists came and said that Jews couldn’t
live in those Muslim countries.
Zionists wanted it to be fused together –
that anti-Zionism would be interpreted as
anti-Semitism. Then they can have con-
trol over the Jewish community and stifle
opposition.
How do you view Christians and
Muslims?
We believe that there is one God. We
believe every person has to believe in one
God. One doesn’t have to be Jewish. We
are not interested in converting anyone.
We are allowed to go into Muslim
mosques. We are not allowed to go into
churches, because we believe they have
idols but we are commanded to co-exist.
So you are closer to Islam than
Christianity?
Truly! That’s the ironic part of it. For all
the years when we were being persecuted
in Christian countries, we knew that we
had a safe haven in the Muslim communi-
ties. Zionism turned everything on its
head.
What do you think about suicide bomb-
ing?
Jewish people have a minhahg (custom-
ary religious practice) – when we suffer or
when someone persecutes us, I have al-
ready explained how we are supposed to
approach them. We pray. We have fast
days. We won’t dictate to any nation. It’s
not our issue to start delving into the

Palestinians.
We believe that the Zionist state is
killing the religion of Judaism and that it
has also done a terrible harm to the
Palestinian people. They have stolen land
from the Palestinians. They had no right
to this land. Palestinians were living there
for over 1,000 years.
We have never been taught to use mili-
tary force. That is not in our teaching.
King David was a fighter.
King David was never permitted to just
go out and wage war against any nation.
They only went into battle because it was
God’s command.
When God said we should go into the
land of Canaan, he said he was expelling
the people of Canaan because they defiled
the land. When Joshua went to take
Jericho, they went around the walls 7
times, the walls sunk… It wasn’t physical
strength. It was a miraculous event.
We had our kingdom. That ended with
the destruction of the Temple. Having an
army is totally forbidden in our exile time.
When we have a complaint, we can’t take
up arms and shoot. The way we have been
taught to fight Zionism is through prayer
and fasting. We cannot dictate to the
Palestinian people how to go about this.
We do not go up against any nation.
Fighting is not in our teaching. We can
just tell the world that what the Zionists
are doing is totally wrong.
When the Messiah comes, everyone will
recognize one God. I am not going to
force this with an ouzi. We never aspired
and we never will aspire to a state of
Israel.

As we prepared to leave, Rabbi Weiss
confided that he was going to Paris, to try
and see Yasser Arafat. He was not al-
lowed in, but we did hear a report on Al
Jazeera about a group of Hasidic rabbis
from New York who were standing vigil
outside Arafat’s hospital in Paris, holding
flowers.
The day after Arafat died, we spoke with
Rabbi Weiss’ colleague, Rabbi Feldman.
He informed us that Rabbi Weiss was try-
ing to find a way to go to Cairo for
Arafat’s funeral.
