This is an introductory chapter of a different approach to the Hebrew verbal system of the Old Testament. More chapters to come. Be sure to read them. The previous chapter gives an over view of the whole system. The next chapter talks about syllables, and follows by a chapter on hebrew hollow verbs in Chapter three. The mystery of the vowel system in the Hebrew verb is carefully explained in the chapter, dealing in sufficient details on the mechanism of conjugations.

Chapter
2
2.1The most important word in the sentence is the verb (
לַעֹופַה
). A verb inHebrew conveys four miens of information related to the verb: semanticmeaning, gender (masculine or feminine), number (singular or plural)and tenses (or aspect).2.2Words in Hebrew (nouns, adjectives, and verbs) came mostly in a unit of three consonants, known as the root (

. In language sciences, a moretechnical word for

or word stem, referred to theheadword which is used in dictionary indexing. The
lemma
is related tolexeme, but it is not necessary to be over curious about it at this point. Itis onto the triconsonantal root specic dyads of default vowels (

וְקיִנ
)are to be uploaded to congure the root into various moods and tensesof the verb. No doubt there are words that come in four consonants, especially in Modern Hebrew.2.3Hebrew reads from right to left, each consonant of the root is namedafter the sequence of the word

Name Calling
N
omenclature and terminologywould be among some of themany obstacles the beginner studentsof Hebrew language must overcome, partly due to different textbooks useddifferent nomenclature system. Itseems there will be a long way togo before attempt to consolidate thediverse approaches into a unifyingsystem would come about. Specialistterminology is useful only to the extentthat it does not in itself become a newproblem along side learning the alreadydifcult enough language.

It may appear too complex and,at times, annoying, but differentnomenclatures are provided hereto facilitate recognition of eachpart of the grammatical units. In other areas lessspecialized word willbe used. Before the emergence of modernlinguistic research, Hebrew grammarianschose the verb
לעפ
, which has themeaning “to do” as an operative conceptto express the morphology and paradigmof Hebrew verbs. Unfortunately, the word
לעפ
has a guttural residing in the middleposition, which means that it could not bedoubled in the case with verbs in the Pi’el,Pu’al and Hithpa’el stems. Nonetheless, ithas been in used over a long period oftime, and the method sticks deep into thesystem, so modern research would justtag along with it.

Meaning of the

 2.5The Simple
binyan: Active - Qal
לק
The Simple stem consists of: (i) The
לק
and the
לעפנ
binyanim
.
לַק
verbs, an active voice, could be transitive or intransitive, as shown bythe sample word:
דַקָּפ

he visited
(
to visit
). The Qal
binyan
apart fromthe triconsonantal root and the pronominal afxes, when under inflexion, has no prosthesis in any verbal form of the
binyan
, not even in theParticiples. To each of its seven or so verbal forms, the Qal
binyan
isgiven by default a pair of xed vowels, both the head vowel as well thestem or theme vowel—hence rules pertaining to the topic and problemsof theme vowel that often appeared to be a difcult part of conjugationof the Hebrew verb would not be applicable to the Qal
binyan
—tocompose the verb in its respective forms. Weak verbs, irregular verbs orstative verbs in Qal
binyan
, however, would be given a vowel [
ַ
] (
חַּתַּ֫פ
),which in other non-Qal
binyan
would hint at passive or irregular verbs,as stem vowel in the Qal Imperative, Qal Imperfect and Qal PerfectTense mainly in zero vowel sufformative conjugation and consonantalsufformative conjugation. Vocalic (vowel) sufformative conjugationof all
binyanim
would go through a process of abdication of the hindconsonant of the root and shortening of the stem vowel to
אווש
. TheQal Participles, active as well as passive participle, have a separate setof stem vowels each. Only in the simple
binyan
the passive participlewould utilise what is known as the alternative vocalic feminine ending, namely, [
ה
ָ
---] (
אֵה
־ץמק
) combination, for the declension of femininesingular participle. The declension of the remaining three, namely, themasculine singular, is a zero vowel sufformative conjugation, and theothers: (a) masculine plural would follow the usual plural declensionfor masculine noun, which carried the [
םיִ
] ending; and (b) the regularplural declension for feminine nouns, which carried the [
תֹו
] ending.Stative verb is available only in the Qal
banyan
, which stem or themevowel may have up to three vowel types. Verbs appearing in the Qal
binyan
would often be active, indicative in meaning.(ii) Verb in the
