Podcasting
What
A podcast is a series of recordings available on the Internet that aretypically intended for use with a digital media device. The distinguishingfeature between a podcast and an mp3 file is the way in which a userreceives the file. Podcasts use RSS (real simple syndication) technology tosend new podcasts to subscribed members.
The term podcast is a combination of the words iPod and broadcast. It is inaccurate, however – an iPod is not necessarily needed. Anyplayback device can be used.
Because anyone can potentially create podcasts, some discretion isneeded when choosing to use them in an educational setting.
Most podcasts are free, however some offer exclusive content for anadditional subscription fee.
Why
Podcasts initially began as an outlet for amateur radio enthusiasts. Usesnow include everything from promoting unsigned bands, to self-guidedmuseum tours, and issuing local government or law enforcementannouncements. Of course, educators have also found podcasting to bebeneficial in their classrooms.
