0008 Civil War Letters Wing Family

Camp near fort Ethan Allen Nov. 10th 1862 Dear. Mother. We received your last letter in due season and was as we always are very glad to hear from home. The reason why I have not written before is because I have had no time we have been very busy building our winter quarters and cutting down trees diging rifle pits and doing a great many other things which I consider out of the line of a soldiers duty. Last week friday it snowed here all day long and that was the day allowed us to fix our tent for the winter and I can assure you it was no pleasant job considering the weather. The way we fix our tent to make it comfortable for the winter is this we log our ground up the same as you have seen a log shanty up north only on a much smaller scale and we use our tent for the roof then to stop up the cracks we use mud in place of plaster our tent that is Gus Sherman A L Stoddard Charley Grace & myself'.s. tent is now almost finished and as we have got a camp stove we can keep quite comfortable. I have been detailed once today to dig rifle pits but as I discovered after we got work that I was troubled with vermine so I got excused for the express purpose of getting rid of them so you can thank the vermine for this short note as soon as I get time I will write you a longer letter there is so little room and so much noise at nights that I cannot write.
