So I’m just about to go to sleepone night and I hear someonetalking outside of the boat. My
rst reaction is fear because I’m just wired up that way – I
guresomeone has lost their mind andhas chosen to start their killingspree with me. But a momentafter that I relax and evaluate...It’s a woman’s voice – that’sgood, I feel less threatened bythem. I generally think I couldtake them in a
ght and I knowmost of them are relatively non-violent. Ok, I relax a bit moreand stick my head out of thecompanionway. A lady is on thecell phone outside the boat.“Oh hi,” she says. “Someonestole my dinghy – I’m lookingfor it.”“That’s too bad,” I reply as ahead sticking out of a boat. “Whydon’t you call the Sheriff?”“I don’t know their number,” shesaid.“Hold on, I think I have it herein The Mariner,” I reached intothe boat for issue 79 and handedit to her.She thanked me and called theSheriff. It was then I realized Iwas a Mariner reader. The thingserved a purpose. For the
rsttime I saw The Mariner not as aplace for all my typos and dog jokes, but as a useful element onthe local scene.I started to read the thing, enjoying the articles, perusingthe classi
eds and reveling in allthe pretty pictures.“This thing is great!” I said outloud.I read the editors comments, laughing at every word. “Myword!” I exclaimed. “This guy isvery very witty!”Later, after drinking a greatdeal, I became angry that therewasn’t enough politics in the ragand I hated the glori
cation of killing
sh in the
shing sectionso I wrote an angry letter to themoron in charge. In the morning I woke up, fullyclothed, shoes still on, with theangry letter in hand. I read it – apologized to myself - thenapologized back and carriedon with my day... better for theexperience.
