On the north side of Derby Pond, which lieswithin Whatcom Falls Parks and is a section ofWhatcom Creek, the Bellingham ParksDepartment Trail Crew has been hard at work.They have resurfaced the existing trail and areplanning to continue the work toward creating asafe and wide trail so residents can pass oneanother and not have to walk through standingwater and mud.This area over the years has also gone througha great deal of erosion and the trail has becomevery heavily used. At one time between the trailand Derby Pond the embankment was wideenough to have a picnic table and additionalstanding room for fishing. Derby has also beena very popular location for kids to fish.In fact its posted as a kids only fishing pond, butof course many people do not take
notice ofthis. The fishing season starts Saturday, April
The keynote speaker at the nextAlabama Hill NeighborhoodAssociation quarterly meeting, May5
th
at 7 pm in the Bloedel-DonovanPark Pavilion, will be Johnathan Shilk,City Park’s Landscape Architect. Mr.Shilk will be on hand to present somepreliminary park improvementconcept drawings, and is veryinterested in receiving comments onthese designs and any additionalideas from the neighborhood. Thisis our chance to comment on thedesign and let the City know exactlywhat we like/dislike about the plan.We believe it is very important tohave as many neighbors attendthis next quarterly meeting aspossible to show the City that theneighborhood wants to see this

Just before Mother’sDay Sunday, May 10th they will beplanting additional fish. If the past yearsare any indication there will probably bea very large number of kids and ofcourse those adults who do not read thesign.DO NOT FEED THE DUCKS!! Breadand birdseed do not have the nutritionalvalue to keep native birds healthy. Theyhave additives which are not part of thenatural diet and can cause the ducks tobecome sick, less resistant to diseaseand less able to escape predators, suchas dogs. Read more about this at ….
