Park Talk

by Richard Maneval
On the north side of Derby Pond, which lieswithin Whatcom Falls Parks and is a section ofWhatcom Creek, the Bellingham ParksDepartment Trail Crew has been hard at work. They have resurfaced the existing trail and areplanning to continue the work toward creating asafe and wide trail so residents can pass oneanother and not have to walk through standingwater and mud. This area over the years has also gone througha great deal of erosion and the trail has becomevery heavily used. At one time between the trailand Derby Pond the embankment was wideenough to have a picnic table and additionalstanding room for fishing. Derby has also beena very popular location for kids to fish.In fact its posted as a kids only fishing pond, butof course many people do not take

notice ofthis. The fishing season starts Saturday, April

PARK TALK continued from page 1
We all love our dogs, but of course they are ourresponsibility, especially when it comes to their waste, also know has dog poop! For a number of years andalong our trails and throughout our parks are what arecalled Dog Trees. These trees have black plastic bagswithin them, and are provided by the Public WorksDepartment. Environmental Resources Section, KymFedale is the contact person - her number is 778-7970.The bags need to be disposed in a waste container, notleft on the ground for someone else to pick up and they dohave any special quality about them, they are a plasticbag!
