THE DAIILY TAR HEEL

CAROLINA SPORTS
You, the readers of

The Daily Tar Heel,

have voted and the results are in for your favorite sports, restaurants, hot spots, amenities and more in and around UNC! Thanks for voting!
Favorite Male Athlete WINNER: Marcus Paige
He may have gained a reputation - and a nickname - as second-half Paige, but unstoppable scoring is welcome in any half. Especially when it results in big wins like the one that took down No. 5 Duke in the Dean Dome in CFs Favorite Carolina Sports Moment of the year. Sophomore point guard Marcus Paige played a starring role in a season turnaround and numerous second half victories. In a tense and raucous overtime win over N.C. State Paige racked up a career-high 35 points, 31 of which dropped through the hoop in the nal 25 minutes. Riding into the ACC tourney on a 12-game winning streak, Paige sank 18 second-half points in an unsuccessful attempt to help the Tar Heels take down Duke once again. Going into the NCAA tournament as a sixth seed in the East region, the Tar Heels pulled out a nail-biting win over 11th-seeded Providence as Paige scored 3 points to tie the game with a minute twenty-seven seconds remaining. Runner Up: Kennedy Meeks Also Ran: James Michael McAdoo and Leslie McDonald round out the hoops luv.

Favorite Female Athlete WINNER: Diamond DeShields

The guard set records (38 points by a North Carolina freshman against State) and broke bones (several in her left hand against High Point) on her way to becoming ACC Freshman of the Year on a 4th seeded team in the NCAA Tournament. That you know. What you might not know is that the basketball star was in love with baseball before she ever played a game of hoops; that she trained in tennis with Venus and Serenas dad; or that one of her dreams is to help people by working in a STEM eld. DeShields was the breakout star of the womens basketball team this year and the overwhelming winner of the Tar Heels favorite female athlete. Runner Up: By the numbers, the runner up would be Mia Hamm, but since we like to call this Carolinas Finest 2014, well stick with

Carolinas current student athletes. Crystal Dunn, the 2013 reigning CF champ and rst draft pick in the National Womens Soccer League, comes in a strong second. Also Ran: Honorable mentions go to Laura Slater and Whitney Kay.

Favorite Carolina Sports Moment WINNER: Beating DOOK Feb 20!

It wasnt even close. After the knuckle-biting day of snow, gridlock, and abandoned cars that cancelled the match at the Dean Dome on February 12, the rescheduled game on February 20 was every Carolina fans dream moment. While the Tar Heels were down by seven points at the half, they staged a convincing second half comeback, sinking Dook 74-66 in the annual Tobacco Road rivalry game. The fans excitement could not be contained as they rushed the court and poured onto Franklin Street for a night of celebration. Runner Up: In a variation on the winning moment, CF readers voted into second place anytime the Tar Heels beat DOOK. Noted: Voter Drew Cabanisss choice: When we scared Duke basketball so bad they decided not to come.

Favorite Intramural WINNER: Soccer

Carolina is the very denition of a basketball school, but for time out, competition, and exercise with friends, we like to put together an intramural soccer team. As many as 4,000 Tar Heels a year play on almost 500 soccer teams in the Campus Rec leagues at Hooker Fields. Runner Up: Basketball. Whew, all is right with the world.

Favorite LFIT Class WINNER: Outdoor Sports

The dynasty continues. A multiple past winner of the favorite LFIT class catagory, Outdoor Sports is an introduction to tness and wellness. The syllabus for the 1-credit course includes playing ultimate Frisbee, ag football, and soccer. All entering students must pass a lifetime tness course in the Department of Exercise and Sports Science. Apparently Outdoor Sports is the crowd favorite for fullling this requirement! Runner Up: Indoor Sports

CAMPUS SCENE
Best Place for Sex WINNER: 8th Floor of Davis
So deeply clichd theres a Friends episode about it, the library is perennially the favorite place for illicit sex on campus. So Davis Library, you are the proud owner of this category, again. For those who need Davis for its ofcial use, you might specically want to avoid the 8th oor. Runner Up: Kenan Stadium. And not discreetly under the bleachers, my friends (or would that more likely be in a luxury box?) More than half the votes for the stadium named the 50 yard line as the spot to do the deed. Also Ran: A few traditionalists still insist on their own room and/ or bed. One reader suggests a cemetary. We hope he means with a live accomplice. Another just says ew.

Best Professor WINNER: Jeremy Petranka, Lecturer Economics

Completely humbled, Petranka told CF. To be voted Carolinas Finest anything couldnt make me prouder. The love among Petranka and the students who voted him best professor is quite mutual. He describes a collective lift at UNC; the product of student energy and involvement as well as a strong desire to be challenged and learn. Petranka teaches Microeconomics, Industrial Organization, and Game Theory. I truly believe my role isnt to teach. Petranka says of his teaching philosophy. My role is to create a structure in which students can learn. I just make sure my students have the resources they need, give them a little bit of motivation, and get out of their way. Its working. He was also the 2013 recipient of the Carolina Chiron Award, which honors teachers who selessly commit to and connect with their students both inside and outside the classroom. Runner Up: Napoleon Byars, associate professor of public relations, who is retiring at the end of this year, as is his wife Queenie Byars. JOMC Dean Susan King told The Daily Tar Heel that the Byars have a rapport with students that surpasses anything Ive ever seen. Also Ran: Daniel Gitterman, last years CF incumbent and associate professor of public policy. Gitterman holds the Thomas Willis Lambeth Distinguished Chair in Public Policy.

Favorite Study Spot WINNER: Davis Library

CF is more than a little concerned that Davis Library is headed toward a showdown: the studiers vs the sexy-timers. Runner Up: Undergraduate Library Also Ran: Carolina Union

Favorite Place To Eat On Campus WINNER: Alpine Bagel

A three-peat for the campus purveyors of crusty, chewy bagel goodness. Manager Paul Hartley tells CF that Alpine bakes its bagels on site, from dough made in a commissary in Hillsborough that only serves us[with] our own recipes. CF would say more, but is busy chewing an Alpine bagel. Runner Up: Med Deli at Lenoir Mainstreet Also Ran: Sitar Indian at Lenoir Mainstreet

Best Campus Bathroom WINNER: Genome Sciences Building

This was a tight CF race between the Global Education Center and the Genome Sciences Building with GSB edging ahead by just a few votes. CF noted last year that GSB had the newest bathrooms on campus, so thats got to be the X factor. Runner Up: FedEx Global Education Center. Sorry folks, 2007 is just old in bathroom years.

Quirkiest Roommate Habit WINNER: Freezes Bacon Grease into Icecubes

CF admits that virtually any entry in the Quirkiest Roommate Habit could have been chosen and that freezes bacon grease into icecubes took top honors because it so easily moves between odd roommate behavior for an unsuspecting undergrad who expects to nd ice in her icecube trays and hey, what a good idea and it can be applied to soup stock, ghee, or crme frache for a cook. Runner Up: People, your roommates nd it strange that youpee with the bathroom door open; dont ush; sleepwalk; sleeptalk; sleep naked; live naked; set 15 alarms; only eat one type of food; eat your cereal noisily; leave pennies everywhere; do headstands; grow moss; suck your thumb; ban morning talking; have sex with said roommate present; use valuable DVR space recording Cops; and collect your toenail cuttings in a jar. CF has to agree.

Favorite Must Take Class WINNER: ECON 101

The spirit of this question is to elict unknown course gems, and not so much required core curriculum, which presumably needs no discovery assistance. So CF needs to reword the question for next year. But various 101s captured top votes and CF annoints ECON 101 the winner of winners solely on the basis of one entrants color commentary: the world would be a better place. CF agrees, and so, Ryan Rosenberg, you are the kingmaker. Runner Up: PLCY 101, the overthrown incumbent, still polled strongly. The battle of Economics and Public Policy heats up. Also Ran: RELI 438: Religion, Sport, and Water: Contemplation and Conservation in over 500 years of Fishing Literature Now thats the kind of off-the-beaten path response CF is looking for and that voter Thomas Elmore was kind enough to provide.

Best Place To Take A Nap WINNER: Graham Memorial

Fall asleep in a couch in Graham Memorial was #61 on The Daily Tar Heels UNC bucket list and readers agree. The building was the original Carolina Student Union and today houses the James M. Johnston Center for Undergraduate Excellence. Yesexcellence in overstuffed couches and stately traditional atmosphere.

Runner Up: Davis and Undergraduate Libraries Also Ran: My bed

ENTERTAINMENT
Favorite Radio Station WINNER: 107.1
In a big CF shake-up, this years favorite radio station goes to WFXK 107.1. Known outside of FCC circles as Foxy Hits 107.1, the station serves up contemporary R&B and classic soul. Yeah baby, CF can get into a groove that can crossfade from the Jackson 5 to Pharrell. Foxy Hits knocked out last years fave WQDR 94.7 country. Runner Up: Pulse 102 and WQDR 94.7 Also Ran: WXYC 89.3

Favorite Local Band WINNER: Mipso Trio

Mipso Trio, who call themselves renegade traditionalists, reached a breakthrough in 2013 with the release of Dark Holler Pop. Recorded with appearances from established NC bluegrass gures from Chatham County Line among others, the album was produced by Mandolin Oranges Andrew Marlin. The trio is Jacob Sharp on mandolin, Joseph Terrell on guitar and vocals, and Wood Robinson on double bass. All three graduated from UNC in 2013. This spring they continue an extensive tour to support Dark Holler Pop and will be at Cats Cradle on April 4th. Runner Up: Morning Brigade Also Ran: Clockwork Kids

Best CUAB Event WINNER: Free Movies

The staple of college union programming boards, free recently-run movies, was far and away the favorite of CF readers. On behalf of CUAB, Swank accepts this award with much humility. Runner Up: Wale & Ace Hood Homecoming Concert Also Ran: Carolina Comedy Festival

Best Live Local Performance WINNER: Mipso Trio at Cats Cradle

CF voters favorite band was, unsurprisingly, also their favorite live performance: Mipso Trio at Cats Cradle. Lets hope now that Mipso is breaking out in the bluegrass scene that they will always come back and dance with the ones that brung em. Runner up: Corey Smith at Cats Cradle Noted: Fully three-quarters of all votes were for one performance or another at Cats Cradle.

The LOCAL Scene

Favorite Outdoor Place WINNER: Polk Place
One of two main quads at the center of campus, Polk Place is the lower, or southernmost one. Generally called just The Quad, its beach-like feel encourages sunning, kiteying, and a host of other sunny day delights. The other quad, McCorkle Place, is the shady home to the Old Well. Polk Place was named in the 1920s for James K. Polk, UNC alumnus, Mecklenburg County native, and the 11th president of the U.S. Runner up: Coker Arboretum Also Ran: The Pit

Best Mixed Drink WINNER: Top of the Hill

If you get beyond the impressive selection of seasonal cask beers without making one of them your order, Top of the Hill also excels at the mixed drink. And by excels, CF and its readers mean really, really, really blow most bars out of the water - er - well - with visionary re-imaginings of the cocktail. TOPO is good at sharing, too. Many mixed drink recipes can be found on their app!

Best Meal After Midnight WINNER: [B]Skis

When the night has moved into the wee hours but not quite to breakfast, readers want to go to [B]Skis for something - anything - cooked to perfect deliciousness and wrapped inside a large, toasty grilled tortilla. Its lunch, its dinner, its breakfast, its anything you want it to be. CF gives a special kudos to [B] Skis for being the only restaurant on Franklin Street open on the second night of Snowpocalypse 2014 willing to make food for 50 hungry, hardworking reporters and editors. So, not only best meal after midnight, but also best meal when everyone else has given up and gone home.

Best Bar Staff WINNER: Hes Not Here

In the second Carolinas Finest for Hes Not Heres new ownership, its bar staff again takes this honor. Its not just the place that makes good times and great memories its the people.

Best Place for a Microbrew WINNER: Carolina Brewery

In the annual battle between Carolina Brewery and TOPO for best microbrew the top spot once again switches hands and goes to Carolina Brewery. Owner Robert Poitras has been busy expanding the distribution of his awardwinning brews, but those of us in Chapel Hill only have to go as far as West Franklin Street to enjoy a great meal with a great craft beer. At their Pittsboro location you can take a free tour of the brewery any Saturday at 2:00 P.M.

Favorite Caffeine Fix WINNER: Starbucks Cleanest Bar Bathroom WINNER: Top of the Hill
This is another multi-year run category. Top of the Hill takes the powder room experience seriously, as all serious establishments CF readers tend to vote up locally owned and home grown Chapel Hill businesses, but the favorite caffeine x is the exception. Here CF voters welcome their ant overlord, Starbucks. Should we attribute this anomaly in the loyalty-habit continuum to an insidious brand, the promise of a soothing sameness, or a genuinely better product? CF encourages readers to explore that question by comparing the cuppa joe from Starbucks with that from Caffe Driade, Open Eye, Caribou, Daily Grind and our other caffeine underdogs.

should. Which prompts a CF challenge: Bar managers, restauranteers, retailers - tour TOPOs bathroom. Learn from it. Emulate it. Please.

Best Theme Night WINNER: Country Night at East End

Its a trend that keeps on trending. Readers continue to love Country Night at East End. Good thing cowboy boots are back in style. So getcher line dance on downstairs at the Deep End.

Most Chapel Hill Hangout WINNER: Hes Not Here

Business Insider scooped us on Hes Not Here for 2014, naming it on March 19th Chapel Hills best college bar. That was supposed to be CFs breaking news, man. Hes Not has had more than four decades to ne tune its game and become a legend in its own time.

Best First Date WINNER: Top of the Hill

Whether you choose the lovely open rooftop dining or the impressive view of the glassed in brewery, this is the place to enjoy and impress on your rst date. If you run out of things to talk about theres games on TV, tons of people watching, a visit to the Back Bar. But you wont. Itll be a great rst date in the ambiance of Top of the Hill.

Best Healthy Meal WINNER: Med Deli

Theres very little about Med Deli that doesnt draw foodie raves, so its good to know that delicious and healthy can be found together on West Franklin Street. The hummus, the gyros, the fataya, the free olive and pickled vegetable barall beloved. New gluten-free pitas are much appreciated by the digestively compromised, although CF can testify that the gluten-tolerant dont necessarily embrace them. Add in reasonable prices, top-ranked catering services, and a casual dine-in vibe and Med Deli is the healthy meal go-to choice for CF voters.

Favorite Frozen Treat WINNER: YoPo

What kind of magic does Yogurt Pump conjure to stay the champion of CFs frozen treat category for ten years straight? Healthy, low fat, and no-fat options for one. A daily menu of exceptional and original avors for another. Think Sea Salt Caramel, White Chocolate Mousse, Snickerdoodle, and Thin Mint. Think swirled avors, wafe cones, and toppings. Favorite Place to Watch the Game WINNER: Hes Not Here

Hes Not Here wrapped up three categories in the voting this year, including this very important informational category - best place to watch a game. There are few more crucial things to get right when youre a cord cutter who just has no access at home to TNT and wouldnt miss the purveyor of marginal Hollywood movies mixed with reruns of Charmed and Smallville...were it not for March Madness. The NCAA says, Take that, cord cutters! So pull up a Blue Cup and root for the Tar Heels in the bar that is also the Most Chapel Hill Hangout with the Best Bar Staff.

Best Place to Live WINNER: Chapel Ridge

Chapel Ridge easily locks down its champion spot for another year. Residents enjoy resort-like accommodations including a swimming pool, basketball and volleyball courts, and an impressive tness center. CF is kinda curious about a store that features a UNC boat fender on its front page of products online. Runner Up, Best Place to Live: Granville Towers Also Ran: The Warehouse, Mill Creek, and Ram Village all made respectable showings.

Best Burger WINNER: Buns

Taking the top burger spot for the fourth year in a row, CF imagines Buns management matter-of-factly cutting another notch into the grill that serves up so much meaty happiness. It also gets kudos from readers for serving veggie options and having terric fries. CF wants to commend Bunss adorable, inspired, web site.

Best Lunch Bargain WINNER: Suttons

Suttons is a time-capsule of the early 20th century - the drug store and diner at the heart of a small town. No wonder its on every UNC bucket list. This month alone, both Rob Lowe and the Travelocity gnome were spotted eating at Suttons. Just in case you need more reasons than classic burgers and milkshakes to get there.

Best Carolina Gear WINNER: Johnny T-shirt

What is it? The great selection? The cozy, friendly store? The status that comes with more than 30 years of staying power on Franklin Street? Johnny T-shirt is a Chapel Hill institution that once again comes out on top with readers for best Carolina gear.
