Nursery Newsletter October 09
Open Night
It was good to see so many of you at the recent Open Evening in the nursery. We hope you enjoyedlooking at your child’s Early Years Learning Profile Folder and at the many displays, pictures and photographs around the nursery. Please remember you can look at your child’s folder at anytime.
Topics
The children have been learning about traditional stories through books, puppets, feltstory boards and role play. We have been looking at size while learning the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears and the Three Billy Goats Gruff. We have also beenlearning to use the tools on the interactive white board to help us tell the story insequence. The children enjoyed decorating and eating their own Gingerbread man after reading the story. As well as the work we did within the nursery we also participated in a whole school‘warm up to books week’. The children decorated the nursery door with the story of the ‘GingerbreadMan’ and on the Thursday we all had a fantastic time joining in the parade around the school in our book character costumes with the rest of the school. We are also still concentrating on settling the children in, learning routines and rules and encouragingsharing, turn taking and friendships. Every day we discuss the weather and the days of the week. Wealso have a sound of the week table which we encourage the children to add to by bringing something infrom the house that begins with the initial sound we are discussing. We would also ask that you consider environmental print as well as resources. For example when ‘a’ was our sound of the week we discussed‘Asda’ so the children could bring in an ‘Asda’ bag.
Falkirk Football Club
As you may remember last month the children had a visit from Falkirk Football Club and the BBC cameto video the children playing ball games. The footage was broadcast last Tuesday on the BBC and aDVD will be made of this. Once we have the DVD we will be happy to make you a copy of the broadcastif you supply us with a blank DVD. All children have also been given a certificate in celebration of this.
Autumn walk
The children went a walk to the park before the October holiday and observed thechanging colours of the leaves on the trees as well as finding lots of chestnuts andtwigs. Within nursery the children have enjoyedexploring the natural world in our Nature Area. Wewould like to thank parents for encouraging thechildren to bring in some leaves and chestnuts to add to our nature area.On our walk we also reinforced the importance of holding hands and we practised how to cross the road safely.
Eco Schools
The nursery and school now have their Eco Schools Green Flag award. The children innursery will continue to be involved in reducing litter and waste, improving the nurseryenvironment and also reducing water and energy use. They recently had a talk from twochildren from primary 6 and 7 about being eco friendly and about our ‘Walk to school onWednesday’ initiative. The children were very good at listening and answering questions thatthe big boys and girls asked. We hope you will support us in encouraging the children to be considerateof the environment that we live in and if possible support us in our walk to nursery on Wednesdays. Wewill be competing with all the other classes in the school to see how many children walk to school onWednesdays.
Dental Hygienist
