The Stages of Learning n Online Tutoring

Online tutoring is the most convenient means of learning in today’
s world. While it  brings along a lot of benefits in the form of flexibility of timing and easy accessibility of the tutor at the click of a button or by means of a software etc., however, the process of learning has to be methodical. There are 5 stages of learning in the domain of Onli
ne Tutoring as outlined by Gilly Salmon in 2000 in his publication “E
-moderating

A Key to Teaching and Learning Online.”

The 5 Stages of Learning in Online Tutoring are as follows:
1.

 Access and motivation
The first stage involves setting up of the system or platform for the delivery of the online tutoring. The necessary tools in the form of a steady internet connection, computer, software or an application for video conferencing etc. should be accessible for both the tutor and the student. Also, the tutor should be optimistic and motivating enough for the student to gain confidence about the online tutoring course. The online tutor should also be welcoming enough in order to strike a chord of comfort between the student and the tutor to facilitate learning in a stress free environment. 2.

Online socialization
An online tutor or an e-moderator should be approachable. The channel of communication should be open and there should be cognizance about the fact that there might be cultural, socio-economic and other differences between the tutor and the student. Keeping the possibility of differences in mind an environment of learning should be established. There should be constant communication between

the tutor and the student, either through email, chats, video conferencing or any other convenient methods.
3.

Information exchange
The online courses should have the facility of a searching and personalizing software or application, using which, the scope of doing effective research should be possible. There should be enough information exchange between the student and the tutor in the form of learning modules, tasks and assignments, learning materials etc., which will provide an environment conducive for learning. 4.

Knowledge construction
There should enough technical help available in case of any technical glitches or outages. Today, the delivery of online sessions is far more effective due to the conferencing facilities that are available. Also, the online tutor should be a facilitator who should be the guiding light in steering the sessions towards constructing knowledge. The learners or the students should not feel any kind of hindrance to ask questions to clarify any confusion. As by doing this, the process of knowledge construction will be rewarding. The process of knowledge construction can also be achieved by having group discussions (involving peers of the students) via the mode of online conference chats, video calls etc. 5.

Development
This is the last stage during which the e-moderator or the tutor can encourage critical and creative thinking on the part of the student who can then ponder over how the delivery of modules can be improved further. During this stage, apart from the regular delivery modes the students can be given the ownership to identify other tools which could facilitate their learning etc.
