What is food sovereignty?
“Food sovereignty mean the
RIGHT
of peoples, communities,and countries to define their own agricultural system, labour,fishing, food and land policies which are ecologically, socially,economically and culturally appropriate to their uniquecircumstances. It includes the true right to food and toproduce food, which means that all people have theright to safe, nutritious and culturally appropriate food and tofood-producing resources and the ability to sustainthemselves and their societies”
(IPC 2006, p.1).
 
Origins of foodsovereignty
Food sovereignty, originally, existed in most countries inthe world.
Food sovereignty means, food that has its own localpoint of origin.
Usually these are diverse, adaptable and integrated withlocal environment without intervening influences fromoutside.
Food sovereignty, also means access to land, water,genetic resources, as well as the people’s right to knowand to decide about their food policies.
